On Saturday, the Dons returned to Piedmont to play Windsor in the tournament finals after knocking the hosts out in the semis. The first quarter was a contrast in styles as Windsor hit their first 3 threes while Acalanes started with layups from Jake Davis, Jack Bayless and Theo Stoll. Acalanes controlled the glass against the smaller Windsor team as well. The Dons trailed 14-17 after the first quarter with Windsor continuing their hot shooting.
The Dons started out strong in Q2 with Justin Zegarowski bringing the crowd to their feet with an and 1 drive and Zubin Acuna hitting a 3. Zubin added another bomb and Theo hit one as well with Windsor hitting matching 3s in the shooting contest, keeping it tight. Jake added a free throw and Theo hit an acrobatic layup but it was a back and forth quarter overall, and with 2 late 3s Windsor led 33-38.
Q3 started off better for the Dons with Jordan Brown hitting an elbow jumper, Jake adding his second 3, and an and 1 tip in, and Zeg hitting a 3 which brought the impressive Dons student section to a frenzy. The defense also improved with Jack forcing 2 jump balls and Theo drawing a charge and getting a steal. Zubin hit a late 3 to give the Dons a 1 point lead at the break 50-49.
Q4 started off strong again with Jake getting a basket inside, a three, and an assist setting Theo up for another long one. Windsor refused to give up and kept it close despite more 3s from Jake and Zuuuuuubinnnnn and another nice finish from Theo. Windsor used some solid free throw shooting and iso ball to tie it up and force another overtime, our second of the tournament.
The overtime period featured a lot of free throws with Theo leading the charge and cashing 4, Jake with a monster block late, and Jack with a nice contest on the final shot to give the Dons a 72-70 win and the title. THANK YOU again to the students who made the trip to Piedmont to cheer on the Dons. Jake led the Dons with 24, Theo had 22 and sniper Zubin added 12 on 4 threes. The Dons moved to 4-0 on the season and will tip off next at the Chris Huber Tournament on Thursday.
