While the weather finally cooled off for today’s College Park match, the Girls Varsity Tennis Team certainly did not as they dominated the host Falcons 8-1. Starting from the top of the ladder, the #1 singles (Ari Ruczynski) and #1 doubles team (Kailyn Broad and Emily Berkowitz) immediately set the tone with quick commanding 6-0, 6-0 victories over College Park’s starting line-up. In quick succession, the rest of the team followed suit with hard-fought victories across both the singles and doubles lines. Martha Burns and Ashley Donner rolled to 6-1, 6-0 victories in their respective singles matches and Cate Condy overcame her opponent’s strong ground strokes winning a first set tie-breaker before taking control to win her match 7-6, 6-1. Piper Duff added her 6-2, 6-0 effort to the team’s winning tally, while Aamena Shipchandler put up a terrific fight in her match, falling just short at 3-6, 5-7. Despite the result, which may or may not have included a bit of scorekeeping confusion, Aamena was awarded Player of the Match by her teammates for her impressive first varsity league match as a Frosh. Congratulations Aamena!
On the doubles side of the ledger, the winning ways continued with Marcela Wisniewska and Lucy O’Brien showing determination to bounce back and win in a tie-breaker at 6-2, 2-6, 10-6, and Shipley Duff and Olivia Dawkins cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 victory as well. There were also a number of wins across the Exhibition Matches which included Lilou Picard, Parker Grenby, Nicole Parlett, Rachel Gottfried, Liv Heglie, Sarah Shepherd and Sienna Moise. Overall, it was an impressive start to league play with team energy running high. Next up, a home match vs. cross-town rivals Campolindo on Thursday 9/15. LETS GO DONS BEAT THE COUGS!
