On Wednesday, the Varsity Dons Baseball team traveled to Brentwood to take on the highly ranked Liberty High team.
Liberty got off to a quick start and put up 3 runs in the first two innings, while the Dons bats remained largely quiet. Ethan Rowland (Sr.) shut Liberty down in the 3rd before giving way to Benjy Braunstein (sr), who blanked Liberty for the final 4 innings.
With the Dons down 3-0 in the top of the 5th, Sammy Lee (jr) drew a lead-off walk and advanced to 2nd on Luke Souza’s (sr) walk. Jack Cusumano (sr) got the bats going with a one out single to bring home Lee. Gavin Bender (soph) then brought home Souza with a single of his own and chased Liberty’s starting pitcher.
With the score 3-2, Miles Bergman (sr) smashed a triple to the left-center field fence, putting the Dons up 4-3. Will Berrien (sr), Niko O’Rourke (jr), and Kyle White (sr) all added singles and by the end of the inning, the Dons were up 6-3.
That was all the runs the Dons would need as Benjy Braunstein found his groove on the mound, keeping Liberty off balance and off the scoreboard.
Niko O’ Rourke added an insurance run in the 7th with a towering lead-off home run that easily cleared the left-field fence and is probably still rolling.
Braunstein shut down Liberty in the 7th to seal the 7-3 Dons victory.
