Riding a 6-game unbeaten streak, the JV baseball Dons hosted the Foothill Falcons on a perfectly mild Thursday night. The Dons certainly did their part to make the evening a pleasant one for their fans by dominating on both sides of the ball and making it look easy. The Dons got right down to business in bottom 1st, with Mason Zirkel getting a lead-off walk, and scoring on the first of Sully Bailey’s four hits in the game. In the 2nd, Jake Boselli scored on a bases-loaded walk, but the Falcons miraculously managed to avoid further damage. The Falcons’ good luck didn’t last very long though: in bottom 3rd, Sully and Benji O’Rourke led off with singles, Jake Boselli walked, and there was no escaping the jam this time around. Wyatt Cooper smacked a double down the left field line, scoring two, James Stadt followed with a single good for two more runs, and then scored himself on a passed ball. The Falcons’ starter couldn’t get out of the 3rd inning, and the relievers didn’t fare much better. Everett Glass led off with a double to the gap in the 4th, Sully followed with another double, and scored on Wyatt’s RBI groundout. In the 5th, Aidan Yates started the inning with yet another lead-off single, Mason smacked a double over CF’s head, Keegan Goddard knocked in a run with a single to the right, and then Sully continued his most excellent day at the plate with a monster triple off the RF fence. Another Falcons pitcher came in, and was greeted with Wyatt’s double to dead center, good for 2 more RBIs. The Dons added another run in bottom 6th on a dropped fly ball from Sully. The Dons collected 14 H and 8 walks on the day, with Sully leading the way with 4 hits (a HR short of a cycle), Wyatt adding 2, and Benji, Everett, Aleksey Volobuev, James, Keegan, Mason, Aidan, and Paul Kuhner each getting a hit. Wyatt led the team with 5 RBIs, Sully had 3, and James and Keegan added 2 RBIs apiece.
On the other side of the ball, the Dons were just as impressive. Peter Thorn started on the hill, and had a really good day, giving up a lone run (unearned) on 2 H and 1 BB over 5 innings, fanning 4, and 70% of pitches going for strikes. Brady Quinn came out in relief and contributed two more strong innings, giving up a run on 2 H and 1 BB and 2 K. Dons defense was rock solid, with no errors committed, and several long fly balls tracked down in the outfield. Web gems of the night were provided by Jake Boselli, making a spectacular catch in the very far corner of left field, and Peter Thorn helping his cause by starting a 1-6-3 double play that ended what looked like a promising top 3rd for the Falcons.
The JV Dons will be back in action next Tuesday at College Park for the first game of an Away/Home 2-game series.
