Still unbeaten in 2022, the JV Dons took their winning streak on the road for the away leg of the two-game series against the College Park Falcons. Using the proven formula of strong hitting and shut-down pitching, the Dons overwhelmed the Falcons in a contest that left no doubt about which team was stronger. For a change, the Dons didn’t score any runs in the 1st, and even spotted Falcons a run, but then Dons did pour it on in the 2nd. The inning started uneventfully for Dons with 2 long fly-outs, but then Benji O’Rourke and Wyatt Cooper hit singles, and Keegan Goddard knocked in Benji with another hard groundball single up the middle. Aidan Yates drew a walk, and it was back to the top of the lineup for more damage: Mason Zirkel knocked in two more on a line drive to the left, and James Stadt followed with yet another RBI single. The game was not close afterwards. The Falcons starter managed to avoid giving up more big innings, working seriously hard at it (throwing 103 pitches in 5 innings!), but the Dons continued to score at a steady pace. In the 4th, Keegan got onboard with a lead-off single, and scored on a sac fly from James. In the 5th, Sully Bailey hit a trademark double deep into the RF gap, scored on the Jake Boselli’s RBI groundout, and then Benji drew a walk and scored on Keegan’s line drive up the middle. Dons collected 11 hits in all, and could easily have done even more damage (8 runners were left on base). Keegan led the offensive display: 3-4 and 3 RBIs, Mason and James had 2 H and 2 RBIs apiece, and Everett, Sully, Benji, and Wyatt also got hits.
On the other side of the ball, Jack Giorgianni got the start, and once again threw a gem. The Falcons managed to score a run in the 1st, but that was it, Jack was his usual stingy self the rest of the way. Falcons haven’t played the Dons before, and when they did manage to get onboard, they had no idea just how nasty Jack’s pick-off move to 1st is, and it cost them two base runners. Jack went for 5 innings, giving up 1 run on 6 hits, while striking out 4. Brady Quinn came out in relief, and closed the game out with 2 clean innings of 2-hit ball. The Dons infield defense was a bit shaky, with a couple of errors, but those didn’t cost them. The outfield was rock solid as usual, a few balls got hit hard but did no damage.
The College Park Falcons will be at Acalanes for the series conclusion on Thursday March 17.
