The Acalanes Freshman baseball team couldn’t ride the momentum of their home sweep of Las Lomas over the weekend into their game at Monte Vista on Monday, falling by a final score of 8-2 in a game that lacked suspense.
Acalanes got on the board first. After being hit by a pitch, Cole Gwaltney stole second and was driven in with a RBI single to right field by David Roux. Sam Bishop got the start on the mound. He pitched 1 1/3 innings, giving up 2 runs on 1 hit and 5 walks. Brody Greenfield, who got his first pitching action of the season, came in with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 2ndinning and was able to prevent any of the inherited runners from scoring by inducing a fly out to David Gonzales in centerfieldand ground out to Hank Bauer at 2nd base to end the inning. Acalanes was able to tie the game 2-2 in the top of the 3rd inning when Ben Pecci hit a single to left field, stole second base and third base, and advanced home on an overthrow by the Catcher to 3rd base.
The game was put out of reach when Monte Vista scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning. All but one of the runs was unearned as Acalanes committed 3 errors to go along with the 3 hits and 2 walks that were surrendered in the inning. The lone bright spot for the day was the pitching from Cruz Lopez, who also got his first work of the season. Making heavy use of his slider, he lasted 3 innings while giving up no runs, 2 hits, and 1 walk.
The statistics for Acalanes for the game were not pretty…2 runs on 3 hits on offense while surrendering 8 runs on 6 hits, 8 walks, and 5 errors on defense. The team looks to turn things around this Saturday, March 26 when it travels to Las Lomas to play another double header.
