The Lady Dons opened up the Marin Catholic Invitational with a 53 to 46 victory over highly regarded Capuchino. It was a good win for our very young team, as Capuchino came into the game rated #13 in the Bay Area (West Coast Preps). After trailing early, the girls exploded with a three point barrage led by Karyss Lacanlale’s 15 first half points. The lead stretched to double digits before Capuchino cut it to 5 points. The Lady Dons led 31 to 26 at the break. The third quarter was back and forth as the Dons struggled with foul trouble and Capuchino going to a zone defense. Finally in the 4th quarter the girls seized control behind key baskets from Isabella Aris-Dumas and Kelly Todhunter down the stretch.
Karyss Lacanlale led the team with 21 points from her PG role and also played outstanding defense down the stretch on Capuchino’s best player. Isabella Aris-Dumas added 10, Dulci Vail scored 7 and Kelly Todhunter tallied 6. It was also an outstanding defensive effort by freshmen Dulci Vail who guarded Capuchino’s senior 6’2 post (D1 commit) and held her own.
The Lady Dons now advance to Round 2 of the tournament tonight at 6:30 where they face St Ignatius which happens to be one of the top teams in Northern California.
