It was just 3 weeks ago that Acalanes went to Campo and won a thriller in double overtime. On Wednesday night it was Campo’s turn to return the favor, beating The Dons 8-5 in another double overtime battle.
Campo came out strong, seeking revenge and opened up a 2-0 lead in the first quarter on a rainy night in Lafayette. The Dons looked flat on offense, but their defense was solid, especially junior Audrey Cox who had a stellar game in goal. The second quarter was a story of two great defenses, with the Dons unable to create opportunities on offense and Campo unable to get shots past Cox, bringing the game to halftime still 2-0 in favor of Campo.
Acalanes finally got things moving in the third period. Senior Captain Heidi Heffelfinger scored two quick goals to tie the game, first on a penalty shot and the second one on a long outlet pass from goalie Cox. Campo regained the lead for a short time 3-2 but Heffelfinger was not to be denied in the third period, adding 2 more goals in a similar fashion to the first two – one on a penalty shot and another beautiful outlet pass from Cox. And with that the Dons saw their first lead of the game as the third period ended.
Campo won the fourth quarter sprint and quickly tied up the game. As the rain picked up, both sides continued to put up stalwart defenses and the fourth period ended in the 4-4 tie.
But this was to be Campo’s night. They opened up the first of two overtime periods with 2 scores and added a third early in the second overtime to take a 7-4 lead. A late goal by junior Maizie O’Hare cut the lead to 2, but it was too little too late. Campo added an empty net goal to end the game 8-5.
Heidi Heffelfinger netted 4 goals, and Maizie O’Hare had 1. Audrey Cox had 12 saves in goal and 2 assists in a wonderful effort.
