Girls Varsity Tennis has gotten off to a valiant start with their non league pre season matches in the past two weeks. Veteran coach Drew Diefenbach has reached out to several new schools to get challenging matches on tap for his relatively young Varsity lineup. ( Three 2021 graduated seniors have left open opportunities for younger players in the current singles line up) Congrats to Junior Martha Burns for garnering the top singles spot.
Let’s get caught up:
The team battled hard against Foothill High School (2-7) and Bishop O’Dowd (1-8). Though the overall scores swung in favor of the opposing teams, there were a number of close matches. Great competition all around!
Dons Player of the Match award against Foothill High School was Kit Scheirer with an incredible 3rd set tiebreaker win.
And against Bishop O’Dowd, the Dons Players of the Match were Marcela Wisniewska and Sienna Moise.
Last week the Varsity Girls squared off against Archbishop Mitty from San Jose and a familiar foe, Berkeley High School.
Dons went 1-1 on the week and pick up their first win of the season!
Against Mitty (2-5), the Dons picked up wins at number 4 singles and number 3 doubles. Cate Condy was named Dons Player of the Match for her performance at number 4 singles. Congrats to her! All of the singles players put in a good fight including Burns, Scheirer, and Morris. Dubs players Harley and Berkowitz lost a close one in the 3rd and Donner and Duff had a nice comeback in the second set but fell short. Wisniewska and Moise won a super tight match 7-6, 6-7, 10-4. We all had fun cheering them on at the end!
Against Berkeley (5-2), the Dons took away their first win on the season. Due to poor air quality, the teams agreed to play a shortened format (Best 2 out 3 short sets with a 7 point tiebreaker in lieu of a 3rd set). Burns battled hard at the number 1 singles spot and is playing better with every match. Lines 2,3, and 4 picked up singles wins with Scheirer and Morris playing some of their best tennis of the year. In the doubles, our number 1 team (Harley and Berkowitz) picked up their first win of the year, but more importantly played well and had some fun out there. Picard and Wisniewska lost a close one at the number 2 spot, 5-7 in the third. And getting in on their first official varsity match were JoJo Bishop and Avery Bahl who also took home a victory. Congrats to them!
Congrats also toKayli Harley and Emily Berkowitz for being the Dons Players of the Match for their fantastic play at number 1 dubs.
Home match against Mission San Jose on Thursday 4pm start. GO DONS!
