Varsity Baseball Looks to Rebound on Monday

Final weeks on campus, in the classroom and on the baseball field with our Senior Dons. Congrats class of 2021

The Dons varsity baseball team took on Campolindo on Thursday and Friday, and unfortunately came up on the wrong side of the scores.

In the first game, the Dons started strong by loading the bases in the first inning with a single by Miles Bergman (jr) and walks by Kyle White (jr) and Brady Huchingson (sr).  However, they were only able to plate one of those runners.  For the first two innings, it looked like that run might be able the Dons needed, as pitcher Dante Montgomery (jr) was cruising.  However, Campo got to Dante in the 3rd and put 2 runs on the board, to give Campo a 2-1 lead.  That was all Campo would need as their staff kept the Dons off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.  Camp went on to win 6-1.

Dante Montgomery

Dante finished with 6 strikeouts over 4 innings, and Connor McPhail (jr) and Miles Bergman mopped matters up from the bullpen.  Bergman, White, and McPhail all had hits, while Luke Souza (jr) added 2 of his own.

Miles Bergman

The second game was much closer.  With the score tied 0-0 after 2 innings, the Dons got the scoring started in the 3rdJack Cusumano (jr) and Miles Bergman (jr) reached base on errors, and Cusumano scored on a single by Ben Burleigh (sr), while Bergman came in on booming flyout by Kyle White (jr) to give the Dons a 2-0 lead.

Benji Braunstein

Meanwhile on the defensive end, the Dons play was stellar.  Pitcher Benjy Braunstein (jr) was efficient and in command from the start, getting the first 2 Campo batters out on 3 pitches.  Benjy ended up throwing 5 strong innings, giving up just 1 run on 4 hits and no walks, while throwing only 47 pitches.  The junior outfield trio of Will Berrien, Connor McPhail and Kyle White tracked down everything hit their way, while 3rd baseman Sam Heyman (sr) made a couple stellar plays and shortstop Brady Huchingson (sr) turned a double play in the 4th to kill a potential rally.

With the Dons up 2-1 in the 6th, and pitching changes made on both sides, it looked like the Dons were going to put some more runs.  Sam Heyman drew a lead off walk, and Brady Huchingson hit a rocket to 3rd base that surely would have been a double had the 3rd baseman not leaped in the air to make an amazing backhanded grab.  Unfortunately in the bottom of the 6th, Campo was able to manufacture 2 runs to take a 3-2 lead, and leave the Dons wondering how the win got away from them.

The Dons will look to bounce back next week against Las Lomas (Monday at home) and Benicia (Tuesday at home; Thursday on the road).
