Varsity Baseball Gets Dirty and Hits, Pitches Past Las Lomas, 6-3

After a rough couple games, the Dons needed a bounce back win and they got one Monday against Las Lomas.

Ethan Rowland picks up the Win

Ethan Rowland (jr) started on the mound for the Dons.  After cruising through the 1st inning, Las Lomas started to get to Ethan in the 2nd, putting their first four runners on and plating 1.  With second and third and 1 out, Ethan struck out the next batter and then induced the following batter to ground out, killing a potential Las Lomas big inning and showing the resilience Ethan has all year.

Sam Heyman rests at 2nd after a big hit

The Dons got their scoring going in the 3rd, when Miles Bergman (jr) led off the inning with sharp single to center.  Bergman stole second and advanced to 3rd on Kyle White’s (jr) single.  Sam Heyman (sr) came up and ripped a double into the left field corner scoring both Bergman and White.

Miles Bergman ready to steal again

After Las Lomas took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 4th, the Dons came back to tie it in the bottom of the inning.  Luke Souza (jr) led the inning off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Connor McPhail (jr) before scoring on a smoked double off the bat of Miles Bergman to tie the game.

Dons celebrate the win

The score remained tied 3-3 until the bottom of the 6thWill Berrien (jr) drew a hard-earned walk, stole second and advanced to 3rd on a balk.  Connor McPhail walked, and with one out, Jack Cusumano (jr) laid down a well-executed safety squeeze bunt to bring in Berrien and put the Dons up 4-3.  The Dons added two more insurance runs in the inning.  They were only insurance runs, as Miles Bergman, who came in to relieve Connor McPhail who pitched 2 hitless inning, pitched a hitless 7th of his own to secure the 6-3 victory.

Drew Megibow honor Don today. Drew threw out first pitch and was the bat boy. His brother Jake will be a Don next year and will play on this field.
