With star shortstop Davis Diaz (sr) out with a hamstring injury, the Dons shuffled up their defense for the first of three games this week against Campo. Sam Heyman (sr) took the hill and was brilliant over four innings, giving up 3 hits and 0 earned runs while striking out 4. Unfortunately, the defense wasn’t there to back him up and when Heyman left the Dons were down 3-0.
The Dons bats finally got the offense going in the 5th. Juniors Will Berrien and Jack Cusumano lead the inning off with singles and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Ben Burleigh (sr). Miles Bergman (jr) then lined a double into the left center field gap, scoring both Berrien and Cusumano. Bergman then stole 3rd and walked home on a balk by the pitcher, tying the score at 3-3.
Unfortunately, the runs dried up for the Dons after that, while Campo was able to manufacture a run in the bottom of the 6th and walk away with a 4-3 win.
The Dons out hit Campo 8 to 4 with Miles Bergman leading the way with 3 hits. Kyle White (jr), Brady Huchingson (sr), Sam Heyman, Will Berrien, and Jack Cusumano all had hits as well. The Dons and Campo collide again on Thursday at Acalanes and Friday at Campo, so the Dons still have a chance to take the series.
