On Friday afternoon the Lady Dons made the long trip across the Richmond Bridge to San Anselmo and the high school formerly known as 1327. It was a cold evening but the Dons started quickly with Alana McCartney winning the sprint to start the game. The Dons attack failed to click on their first couple of possessions but at the other end the Pirates could make no impression on the Dons well organized defense. Eventually the Dons began to exert some concerted pressure and a sharp pass from Claire Rowell found Heidi Heffelfinger who made no mistake to score the first score goal. Rowell then drew and converted a five meter penalty shot before Emma Miller seized on a loose ball to score the third. The quarter ended with Heffelfinger turning provider and assisting first Alana McCartney and then Claire Rowell. It was 5-0 to the Lady Dons at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter continued in much the same vein with Acalanes dominating possession and looking dangerous in attack and strong in defense. The Dons showed their increasing strength in depth when two of their younger players combined for the first score of the second quarter, with Alexa Carter providing an inch perfect long pass for Maizie O’Hare to score a slick goal. Two of the old stalwarts then combined for a score as Alex Mould dummied to shoot before flicking in a no look pass for Claire Rowell to score from close range in front of the cage. Carol Schirmer then joined in the fun with an accurate shot before Heidi Heffelfinger converted a five-meter penalty shot. It was 9-0 at half time.
The Dons had put in a dominant first half performance and were in complete control. With the game as good as won Coach Buchel took the opportunity to give game time to the extended squad and also give a chance for Audrey Cox to show her skills in the goal. Cox immediately demonstrated her class with a series of fine saves to show that the Lady Dons will have a safe pair of hands in the goal in future seasons. There was just the one goal in the third quarter with Alana McCartney scoring from a pass in from Claire Rowell. In the fourth quarter the Pirates pulled a couple of goals back before Sarah Potter scored after a pass in from freshman Wendy Heffelfinger. The final score was 11-2 to the Dons.
