Game three and next up for the Lady Dons was a visit to fierce rivals Campolindo High School. The Cougars never give Acalanes an easy game and once again they proved to be a tough opponent. The Dons started strongly and went in front when Heidi Heffelfinger passed crisply for Claire Rowell to tuck away her first goal of the night. The Cougars quickly levelled before Caroline Schirmer took careful aim and shot into the top corner after a pass from Emma Miller. Once again Campolindo hit back to level the score. The Lady Dons then began to assert their dominance and scores from Alexa Carter (assist from Alana McCartney), Schirmer (assist from Alex Mould) and Mould (assist from McCartney) made it 5-2 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter started slowly before hard work from McCartney saw her break free and score. Campolindo pulled one back only for Heffelfinger to score and then take a quick pass from Rowell for her second of the night. The Cougars pulled one back to make it 8-4 at half time.
The third quarter once again proved to be the Dons strongest. The first goal of the second half came when Mould rose high in front of goal to catch and shoot from Heffelfinger’s sharp pass in. The Cougars hit back but Heffelfinger chased down a long pass from goalie Ava Donleavy to score her third, before Rowell turned and scored after an assist by Schirmer. Schirmer scored her third to put the Lady Dons comfortably in front 12-5. However, the Cougars would not lie down, first forcing Donleavy to make a brave save before scoring twice. The Dons rallied and hit back through Heffelfinger to make it 13-7 after three quarters.
The game seemed over but, to their credit, Campolindo had other ideas and came out aggressively in the fourth quarter, pressing hard. Acalanes scored first through Rowell but the Cougars finished the game strongly with four straight goals to make the final score closer than it should have been at 14-11 to the Dons. At the end Heidi Heffelfinger had four goals, Claire Rowell and Carol Schirmer three each, with two for Alex Mould and one each for Alexa Carter and Alana McCartney. Heffelfinger had three assists with two for Miller, Rowell and McCartney, and one for Mould. Schirmer had seven steals with three for McCartney and two each for Mould and Rowell, and one for Audrey Cox. Ava Donleavy made 10 saves. The next game is on Thursday at Heritage High School in Brentwood.
