The Dons stole the lead late in the game in a 6-4 victory over the Northgate Broncos on Tuesday.
Miller Smith (and six other teammates) hung up his football cleats on Saturday and put his baseball cleats yesterday. Smith had not been on the mound in six months, but today he started out as the Dons starting pitcher. The righthander went three innings, allowing one run, only three hits and striking out three.
The Dons took an early lead in the second inning. Gavin Bender kicked it off for the Dons with clean hit to left field. Next came Ellis Burger with a deep bomber to center field gap for a double, knocking Bender in, and putting the Dons on the scoreboard. Henry Souza played copy-cat with another double to deep right field, sending Burger home and the Dons took the lead. Logan Mikalis took a walk, putting two Dons the bases. Jake Boselli came to the plate next. Boselli ripped the ball hard to second base and the Bronco bobbled the ball, letting Souza cross the plate. Mikalis stole home from third base on a passed ball, Dons 4-Broncos 1.
Logan Mikalis came to the mound in the fourth inning. The Broncos knotted the game up at four in the top of the fourth inning with a few hits and three runs. The Dons did not score in the fourth, But the fifth inning they did! Sammy Lee lead off the bottom of the fifth with a walk and stealing bases to get himself to third base. Burger took a walk as well. Souza hit a rocket to third base, scoring Lee and moving Burger to third base. Tyler Worthington ripped it to second base, causing the second baseman to juggle the ball, Burger took home without hesitation. Dons 6-Broncos 4
Defensively, Mason Michlitsch had some stellar outs at third base, including a double play. The Dons out fielders had some big catches, against the windy conditions. And behind the plate, Sammy Lee made the Broncos nervous to lead off or steal a base. The Dons pitching squad against the Broncos were Miller Smith, Logan Mikalis, and Henry Souza.
Ellis Burger, Gavin Bender, Nikko Woodson, Henry Souza, and Mason Michlitsch each collected one hit to lead the Dons. Dons runs were scored by Gavin Bender, Sammy Lee, Henry Souza, Logan Mikalis and Ellis Burger scored twice, beating the Broncos 6 to 4.
Thursday the JV Dons travel to Walnut Creek to play Northgate again at 4pm. Hoping for another Don Victory.
