Short and sweet season this year, but Senior Lauren Williams didn’t wait long to make her mark. In the girls’ opening scrimmage against Miramonte, Lauren made her singles debut having only played doubles for the Varsity team last year. Normally the match format is 6 lines of singles take the courts followed by three lines of doubles. However sometimes the coaches put out the top 3 lines of singles and let the doubles teams queue up first, to be followed by the final 3 lines of singles. ( most high school facilities have 6 courts). Best of the 9 contests wins the match. Here’s how the nailbiter played out.
Senior Eliza Bates won at the top line in straight sets, followed by senior Jasmine Toni who won in the third set tie breaker. Sophomore Analese Ruczynski returned to her third line victory form finishing quickly in two sets. With several Freshman making the Varsity roster this year it’s a little tricky to solve the puzzle of best pairings for the doubles teams, and alas we were not able to win any of the doubles lines. Singles 4, 5 and 6 take the courts for the final matches with the score tied at 3 all. Sophomore Martha Burns won easily at line 4 and Freshman Lilou Picard played valiantly at line 5 and came close. Team match tied at 4 -4 the pressure came down to Lauren Willams the last player still finishing. They split sets and went to a tiebreaker to decide the match. Alternating serves, the first player to get to 10 points wins. With all of her teammates cheering from the sidelines..Lauren pulls it out. 10 -8!! Doesn’t get any closer. Great job team. Congratulations Lauren.
Next match Thursday April 22 away AT Northgate.
