The Varsity Don’s Football Team brought the heat to a rather frigid night on Saturday against Monte Vista, winning the contest by a score of 33 to 27 – The Mustang’s were missing quite a few starters due to Covid quarantines, and we are extremely grateful they suited up for the game .
The Don’s Offense was extremely efficient, they only had the ball for 16 minutes and were able to score 5 times! Putting up 442 total offensive yards! Senior Quarterback Brady Hutchingson went 19 for 27 with 260 yards through the air – Brady is proving to be very elusive in the pocket while never taking his eyes off the receivers down field. He got things started early in the contest by connecting to Junior wide out Will Berrien for a 33 yard touchdown strike. Berrien finished the night with 6 catches for 85 yards. On the very next Don’s possession he connected with Junior Slot Receiver Dante Montgomery, who then made several nice moves to streak 55 yards for a touchdown! The second time Montgomery touched the ball was on the next Acalanes possession on a well designed counter. Aided by some really good downfield blocking, he ran 68 yards for his second touchdown of the contest. Senior Tailback Joe Evans (aka JoJo) provided some aggressive ground game for the last two Acalanes Possession – Grinding out a 5 yard run for a Touchdown and then again for 13 yards for his second touchdown of the evening -Senior Tailback Nic Rossi rushed the ball 13 times for 89 yards and kept things moving for the offense. Coach Blue did a great job mixing things up with his play calling, and the offensive line provided Hutchingson with the time he needed to make things happen. Other than putting the ball on the turf a few times the Offense looked very sharp!
The Don’s Defense held strong against Monte Vistas very good run game – Senior Defensive End Joey Carrillo was dominate (repeat dominate) on Saturday with 8 solo tackles, 5 assists, and 1.5 sacks! Joey is heading to UC Davis in the Fall and will continue to do great things for the Aggies! – The Mustangs thought they might have better luck running away from Carrillo… but Ryan Tresser and Nikko Cortessis stepped up and held things down. Tresser racked up 8 solo tackles, 2 of them for a loss of yards, while Cortessis was flying around causing all kinds of trouble, coming up with a big sack to stop a Monte Vista drive. Linebackers Graham Oh and Logan Ketcham held down the middle of the field, while Defensive Back James Gunn had 3 solo tackles and made a super play to intercept a Monte Vista pass attempt. Knowing Coach Ortega he will be happy with the way his defense played, but will find a lot of things to work on with them this week!
The Don’s will be back in action Saturday against Las Lomas at Acalanes – Game time is set to kickoff at 7:00 pm
