Frosh Football Team Takes the Field at Acalanes

The Acalanes Don’s Freshman team FINALLY got to suit up for a scrimmage vs California High School on Saturday. It was great to see these boys put on pads and play full contact football – Nothing says Football Season like a Beautiful Spring Day… but we will take whatever we can get. This is a “bumper crop” year for Freshman Football, I think this is the largest roster this team has ever had, which speak volumes to how this community embraces this game. Bill Hansen has done a great job getting them ready to play with the limited ability they have had to practice.

The Don’s Offense started of with Quarterback Jake Boselli hitting multiple receivers all day… Henry Souza was an early target who caught several nice passes. Lefty QB Sully Bailey also showed off his arm and running ability on Saturday connecting with Gavin Bender and Marshall Anderson, as well as gaining significant yards as tailback. Calvin Kortaba had both a couple of great receptions as receiver, and played Quarterback – This squad has more weapons than time during the game to use them – Most impressive was the Offensive Line, which gave the protection needed to allow things happen – Lucas Rocha, Brady Morrow, Henry Hagel, JD Orear and Trevor Carillo all did an outstanding job against a tough Cal High Defense! I loved seeing the camaraderie between the linemen.

The Freshmen Defense was flying all over the field – Jack Giorgianni got things started by intercepting California’s first pass attempt, and he would have returned it for a touchdown had this not been a scrimmage. Kiran Foster also intercepted a pass attempt and was in on several big tackles. It is a big change transitioning from flag football, which most of these kids are used to playing, to tackle football – It was obvious the defense needs to work on wrapping up the ball carrier and staying on their feet while tackling – but it was an really good showing against their first opponent.

The Freshmen play again next Saturday the 13th at 1:30 pm vs. Monte Vista – and if you can’t make it out to Acalanes next weekend remember, all three games will be LIVE streamed as well.
