YOUR JV volleyball team moved to 7-1 in league play after taking down Miramonte for the second time at home on Tuesday. Emma Johnson came in hot with 8 straight serves including 3 aces to get things rolling for the Dons. Maya Paul, celebrating her birthday, got an early kill to put the icing on her cake. Mara Korzeniowska stepped in to set for a picture perfect Gianna Manzone slam for one more point. Quickly the Dons went up 18-5. Chloe Wu looked solid on defense and Acalanes continued it’s pummeling of the Mats. Rachel Zhang ended the set with an ace. Dons win first set 25-11.
Miramonte then regrouped and decided to fight back in the second set. Carly Coffee served up 2 aces to the give the Dons an early boost. Textbook volleyball, featuring a Kira Wood pass to Zhang set and a Tate Huisingh kill set the tone. It was a rubber match as the Mats and Dons fought for the lead. With the score all tied up at 9-9, in came freshman Hannah Hageboeck with 5 straight aces…not easy to do! The Mats had no choice but to call a time out. Playing tough in the middle position, Claudia Lindgren provided some key blocks. The score was then tied up again at 19-19 and Coffee came in to serve for 5 straight. Wood provided some excitement, diving and saving the serve with a set from a sitting position on the ground.. again, not easy to do! Acalanes pulled out all the stops to avoid a 3rd set. Lindgren successfully tipped to the middle hole. Not to be outdone, a Matador hits it to the back corner and no one can get to it. The Mats then served one way out. Wood served at 24-20, the Mats returned and Zhang set up a Hageboeck kill to end it 25-20.
The JV team has hit their stride and have really come together as a team just in time for another shot at the Cougs! Please come support them in Moraga tomorrow 5pm. Time for redemption!
