The Varsity Dons won the Pittsburg Invitational Tournament on Friday, downing Clayton Valley Charter HS, 6-1. Acalanes came out on top in a good early season test against other schools that play at the NCS Divison 1 level, as Acalanes Baseball does.
Logan Hurd, who was named Player of the Game, got the win on Friday after pitching six strong innings and holding Clayton Valley scoreless for five innings. Hurd allowed just 3 hits and 1 run, with 7 strikeouts. Michael Castelli closed out the final frame, as he did so well throughout the tournament, to secure the championship.
Acalanes got on the scoreboard in the 4th inning when Tommy Thrasher, who was 3-3 at the plate for the day, singled to center field. Sam Heyman followed that up with a liner to center that drove in Thrasher and Acalanes’ first run of the day.
It was in the bottom of the 5th when the Dons ran away with the lead and put up five runs. Nicolas Bamont led off with a laser line drive triple to right field. Nick Kresnak followed that up with an RBI line drive to left, followed by Tommy Thrasher’s line drive to center. Thatcher Hurd kept the line moving with an RBI single to center. Brady Huchingson delivered another RBI, and the final run of the inning came from Scott Brydon’s RBI single to left field.
The Championship game showed off both Acalanes’ defensive and offensive strength against a D1 college commit starting pitcher and a solid team backing him up. The season looks bright for a fired up Dons squad under the leadership of new Head Coach, Clint Hoover, and his talented staff.
