The Acalanes Varsity baseball team shocked Bishop O’Dowd with a 9-1 victory on Friday. The Bishop O’Dowd Dragons, in their home opener, put UCLA-bound pitcher Joe Ross on the mound up against our Dons, amid a crowd of major league scouts. Acalanes was undaunted both by the number of scouts in attendance and the Dragon’s ace. The Dons got their first three batters on base against Ross, with hits by Connor Hornsby and Paul Nork. Ross threw as hard as 94 miles per hour on the night, however the Dons scored 3 runs on 7 hits off of Ross, including 2 doubles by Spencer Henderson. Henderson was also stellar on the mound, letting up only 1 run in 6 innings pitched. AJ Welsh added an RBI double in the 7th, followed by a 2 RBI single by Evan Heptig. In total the Dons finished strong, scoring 6 runs in the 7th inning. Andrew Merken closed out the game in the bottom of the 7th without letting in a run.

JV Baseball also won (at home), 14-2, thanks to a strong pitching performance by Neil Lang, and stellar games at the plate by Tyler Supple and Ryan Myers.

The Dons qualify for the NCS Final with a lot of class!
In probably their most accomplished game (defensively & offensively) of the season, the Dons defeated defending NCS champion Dublin 2-0 on Wednesday in the semi-finals to qualify for another championship game. Acalanes dominated the entire game, with excellent combinations upfront and the usual defensive rigor in the back. In a period of intense pressure from the hosts, senior & co-captain Nick Pereira scored an opportunist goal after 28′ in the first half. After the break, the Dons continued playing with a strong intensity and were finally rewarded with a beautiful second goal from junior David Dadiomov, assisted by junior & co-captain Dylan Autran. Contra Costa Times Athlete of the week, junior GK Jackson Foote was never really threatened but made a couple of courageous saves to keep a clean sheet. Acalanes will play another familiar opponent – Campolindo – in the NCS Final at Las Lomas on Saturday (5pm). Acalanes Sports fans, come and support the Dons for the “Big Game”! Go Dons!
