Varsity Dons Win in Overtime

Acalanes sophomore guard Jackson Aris-Dumas scored all of his team’s five points in overtime as the Dons played shutdown defense in overtime to prevail 55-51 over Foothill in Pleasanton on Tuesday night. Fellow sophomore guard Scott Ruegg had sent the game into overtime by hitting a three pointer with 22 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 50-50.

Eager finally to play after cancellations and postponements, the Dons started the game quickly led by senior guard Ian Archer to take a 15-8 lead after the first quarter.  Foothill fought back in the second quarter, with the Dons up 23-21 at the half.  In the third quarter, the Dons extended their lead to 37-28 after Ruegg hit a three, but Foothill hung in the game; the Dons led 40-34 heading into the fourth quarter.  Senior guard Jack Wickline converted a three point play to give the Dons a 45-38 lead, but Foothill then went on a 10-0 run before Acalanes was able to force the game into overtime.  The Dons featured a balanced attack led by Aris-Dumas and Ruegg each with 11 points; Archer with 8; sophomore forward Joey Carrillo and senior center Jackson Kirke with 7 apiece; and senior guard Ben Lauer chipping in with 5.
