Freshman Dons Football Beats Campolindo 15-7

In the most anticipated game of the season, the Freshman Dons Football team beat their cross-town rival Campolindo by a score of 15-7 on Thursday evening.  The Cougars began the game on offense.  They systematically and methodically pounded the running game, handing the ball off to their big running back, number 59, and running the clock down.  They were able to convert a TD and then a PAT.  Cougars up 0-7 with only a couple of minutes left in the first quarter.

The Dons couldn’t get the offense in gear and the penalty flags were flying.  The defense held tough and was able to keep number 59 at bay.  At the half, Dons find themselves down 0-7.

Freshman Pep Talk

During halftime, team captain Evan Malmquist gave an impassioned speech to the team to fire them up.  The coaches huddled together to set the game plan.  It worked.  The offense started to get going in the 3rd quarter, but couldn’t convert.  The defense again was able to hold the Cougars offense.  Towards the end of the 3rd quarter, the Dons get the ball.  The offense was able to move the ball down the field.  The 4th quarter began and the Dons find themselves within striking distance of the goal line. Luke Souza was able to connect with Miles Bergman in the end zone.  TOUCHDOWN!  In a bold move, they decide to go for two.  Anthony Ortale made an incredible block as Evan Malmquist sweeps left and finds his way into the end zone.  TWO POINT CONVERSION!  Dons up 8-6.

The defense was tenacious holding the Cougars running game as well as putting plenty of pressure on their QB.  Logan Ketchum led the defense with 4 solo tackles and 5 assisted tackles.  Sam Hafner, Dante Montgomery, Rhett Skvarna, Devin Miniello and Ibis Pond all had several tackles and some great stops on defense.  They were able to hold the Cougars on our own 25-yard line to turn it over on downs.  A huge stop for the Dons!  This gave the Dons fantastic field position.  Evan Malmquist sweeps right and battles his way downfield, dodging defenders and stiff-arming anyone in his way.  TOUCHDOWN!  Rhett Skvarna easily kicks the PAT.  Dons up 15-7 in the 4th quarter with less than 5 minutes left to play.

Defense holds the Cougars again.  Dons just need to run the ball to eat up time off the clock.  They get a first down…time runs out.  Game over.  DONS WIN 15-7!  An incredible come from behind win.

Next Thursday, the Dons will travel to Oakland to take on Oakland High.
