Acalanes 9 – Las Lomas 1
The JV Lady Dons recorded a 9-1 win over Las Lomas in our first full DAL match.
Playing at D-3 Niki Palamountain and Skyler DeMartini scored the first Dons point by playing consistently aggressive tennis on their way to an 8-2 win. Niki got her serve under control after a shaky start and Skyler controlled the net throughout the match.
Audrey Glosson and Naomi Berkowitz cruised to an 8-0 shutout at D-5. While Audrey’s “shovel scoop” lob winner will not make the ESPN Top Ten, it was effective. Naomi served consistently well during the match.
An 8-0 shutout was also pitched by Milena Lucey and Sophia Cooper playing at D-6. Communicating effectively and keeping their opponents on the defensive, Milena and Sophia led wire to wire.
Molly Cronk and Sophia Scipi got off to their now-typical slow start but rallied effectively to rack up an 8-4 victory. Molly and Sophia played some really fine points and literally ran down a number of balls to stay in contested points. The coach’s installation of new overgrip on Molly’s racquet was certainly one of the keys to victory.
At D-2, Captains Jess Gerson and Maggie Curless played the most competitive match of the day having to climb out of a 1-4 hole before settling down and winning seven of the last eight games to secure an 8-5 victory and clinch the match for the Lady Dons. Jess and Maggie both served and returned serve well throughout the contest.
Anika Mohanty and Vivi McGinnis–Tingle, playing at D-7 took control of their match early and kept the pressure on Las Lomas as they ran off an 8-1 win. Vivi and Anika communicated effectively and controlled the net on their way to victory.
Aanya Weinstein and Siena Marchiano played a fine match at D-8 and recorded an 8-3 win. Siena served consistently well and patrolled the net, while Anya ran down a number of balls and turned what looked like Las Lomas winners into Acalanes points.
Scarlett Reicher and Maren Quintella took control of their D-9 match early on and did not look back on their way to an 8-1 win. Scarlett played effectively at the net and Maren ran down a number of balls to keep the Lady Dons in points. (You can’t coach speed.)
Playing together for the first time in a match, Lynn Wolfe and Katie Hale rounded out the Acalanes scoring with an 8-2 win at D-10. Lynn played a number of winning volleys from her position at the net and Katie contributed a number of ground stroke winners in a well played match.
Our D-1 team of Shannon McVay and Lauren Craig played a really competitive match that saw a number of extended rallies and deuce games with Las Lomas recording a hard won 8-4 point.
The JV Lady Dons’ record is 6 – 1 overall; 2 – 0 in DAL play.
