Sep 17 – Girls Volleyball Tournament Results

The Lady Dons Varsity volleyball team spent most of Saturday at Pittsburg High competing in the East County Varsity Tournament, which brought together a very strong field from around the Bay Area.

In the first match of pool play the Dons defeated Dougherty Valley in 2, 25-20, 25-13.

The second pool play match was against eventual tournament champion Sacred Heart. With a 24-26 overtime loss in first set, the Dons showed awesome all around team play, the hallmark of the Dons so far this season, which pushed the Valkryies to the limit.

In the 2nd set, after a slow start the Dons rallied back for a stretch, closing to 9-15, but Sacred Heart was too strong down the stretch. The Dons finished 2nd in pool play heading into the playoff bracket.

The Dons kicked off bracket play with another perennial powerhouse, Marin Catholic, the eventual 2nd place finisher on Saturday.

Your Lady Dons jumped out to an early 3-1 lead with the two Frosh, Lane Webster serving and then setting Madi Risch, who delivered a clean kill into the seam.

The Dons kept up the pressure on Marin with super Senior play from Parker Jones and Alex Matson, holding a 5-4 lead.

Soph Rachel Go came in to QB the Dons in the “6-2” setter rotation and fed solid sets to the Don middles Theresa Nevins and Mellisa Elliott, keeping the match tied at 8s.

Matson had a nice serve run, assisted by Jones and Risch kills and helped by Matson‘s own great passing. 13-12 Dons!

Marin Catholic had a bit of a run but the Dons kept fighting. Go set Nevins in the middle for a kill to keep the Dons close at 16-17.

Marin got hot down the stretch however and took the 1st set 18-25.

The Dons started the 2nd set off hot, taking a 6-2 lead forcing an M.C. timeout. Soph Elsa Clever anchored the middle and Matson served beautifully during the stretch.

Unsurprisingly M.C. fought back until Webster set “pipe” to Matson for a kill to make it 9-7 Dons.

Roxy Cummings soon got in on the action with an “Oppo” kill to make it 12-9. Senior Libero Devin Grobeck continued to deliver excellent passing like she has done all season.

M.C. then reeled off 4 straight. Oh the horror! Time out Acalanes, now down 12-13.

Clever tied it back up with a ripped kill from the middle.

A rough patch then ensued. But Webster teed up Clever for another big kill and the Dons got the “mo” back and led 19-17.

Jones then led the Dons with 3 straight winners to secure a 21-18 lead.

BOTH Webster and Go set the ball during a point that Matson finished off with a kill, but then Marin Catholic scored two straight, and the Dons took a time out leading 22-21. I saw nail biting in the crowd!

It was a masterful TO by coach Ernie! The M.C. serve was long. Marin’s Coach countered with their own timeout at 23-21. #chessmatch.

Marin scored 2. 24 all. Overtime!

The Dons ended up falling 24-26, showing a ton of fight. They moved on to the consolation bracket, getting more great experience from this tough tourney with a 20-25, 25-20, 10-15 3-set loss to San Ramon Valley. The Dons showed grit in coming back and taking the second set, getting key contributions from Maddie Kalil, Sam Darin and Sarah Nelson, and clutch serving by Zoe McPhail. The scrappy play by all of the Dons against such tough competition should serve the team well as it gets ready to kick off League Play next. Go Dons!
