October 11 – Acalanes Freshman Girls Volleyball Team Beats Dublin

The Lady Dons traveled to Dublin Tuesday to take on the Lady Gaels, besting them in three sets, 25-10, 24-26, 15-7.  The first set was owned by Acalanes.  Service runs from Alta Paladino and Sarah Moore, along with aces from Lily Bauer and a screaming bullet from Holly Gillar kept the higher score consistently on the Dons side.  When the ball was actually returned, kills from Taylor Odom and Gillar, off assists from Dory Grobeck, silenced the opponents.  Defense remained strong led by Ying Stroebe, who had nice back row shots, as well as a scrambling save by Claire Amaral, to deny the Gaels extra points.  The final two points by Groebek, one of which was an ace, ended the first match.

The second match showed promise with the Dons taking the first point and keeping the lead for the next four.  However the Lady Gaels stood strong, taking the lead from that point and, while each team traded points throughout the match, Acalanes never regained the advantage.  Kills were logged by Moore and Katie McCarty, service aces were from Jillian Wickline and Odom, and nice defensive tips by Janine Jaber and Amaral showed impressive effort.  Stroebe’s jump serves brought the match to 23-23 but wasn’t enough to push the game toward the Dons.  Dublin wins 26-24.

Game three belongs exclusively to the Dons.  Service runs by Paladino, Bauer, and Odom quickly moved the game forward.  Kills by Bauer and Moore added to the score.  A final service ace by Holly Fleischmann ended the set and match 15-7.
