In the second set, College Park came to life in the beginning to keep things tighter through the first part of the set, but the Dons used tough serving and accurate passing to overwhelm the Falcons and easily close out the match 25-12.
The Dons next took on Foothill and avenged a previous tournament loss by taking the Knights in straight sets 25-22, 25-11. The first set was a real battle as the teams traded points and the lead throughout the set, with strong hitting and defense on both sides of the net. Late in the set, Acalanes buckled down to string together a series of points through clutch hitting and passing to win the set 25-22. At the start of the second set, the Dons rode the momentum to raise their game and pounced on Foothill to grab an early lead. Acalanes kept on their winning ways with a straight set victory over Northgate 25-18, 25-20. Effective hitting from the outside and opposite hitters and solid serve receive kept the Broncos at bay as the Dons comfortably won the first set 25-18. Northgate came out in the second set playing scrappy and battled Acalanes throughout the set before the Dons put away the Broncos with several aces and good defense to seal the match 25-20.
In the semifinals, Acalanes ran into a strong team from Sacred Heart. In the first set, the lead went back and forth throughout as the Irish played spirited defense and served effective float serves. The Dons fought hard and had several chances but ended up losing the first set 19-25. In the second set, Acalanes struggled to find their rhythm as Sacred Heart increased the pressure by serving tough and getting a lot of digs. The Dons kept it close initially and were tied 9-9 before the Irish went on a scoring run that proved too much for Acalanes to overcome as they lost the second set 14-25 to end their tournament.
Congrats to the team for finishing tied for third at the tournament – Go Dons!
