Oct 3 – JV Girls Tennis

The Lady Dons JV tennis team played a terrific non-league match against seven doubles teams from Piedmont High in unseasonable heat on Friday afternoon. Although we dropped the first three lines, lines four through seven came up winners.

At D-4, Skyler DeMartini and Hannah Snyder played tenaciously to pull it out 8-6. Trailing 0-2 after an early service break, Hannah and Skyler made some adjustments and dug in to grind out a hard-fought win. Claire Pockell-Wilson and Meena Neelakadan played really well together, communicating effectively on court and covering the net aggressively to win 8-3 at D-5. In the surprise of the day (for me at least) Alexandra Awwad and Sami Browne won 8-3 at D-6. It seemed that every time, I was near them on the far court, Piedmont was closing out a winning game. I was really pleased when Alex corrected my score sheet from 3-8 to 8-3 letting me know that she and Sami were the winners of the match. Rounding out our top seven, Alexia Lucey and Lucy Nguyen handled the pressure of a 7-7 tie to win the deciding eighth game and ensure a 4-3 win for the Lady Dons.

All of our players competed really well in difficult heat conditions. While it was very nice of the Piedmont players to turn around and play a second set so all of our players had a match, it means that girls on the lower portion of our ladder are competing against girls much higher on our opponent’s ladder. Even with this disadvantage, Maggie Curless and Melanie Tymm rallied to a dramatic 8-7 win playing at D-8. Our entire squad competed well.

Next week we return to DFAL play with home matches on Tuesday and Thursday against Campo and Las Lomas, respectively.
