Oct 20 – JV Girls Volleyball
The Acalanes Girls JV Team traveled to Campolindo for a rematch and emerged victorious in three sets 23-25, 25-23, 15-11!
As expected, the two teams battled from the very beginning of the match as the lead went back and forth, with the Dons putting pressure on the Cougars with effective float services and strong outside attack by Roxy Cummings and Ren Dunwoodie as well as blocks and quick attacks by middle blockers Riana Buchman and Elsa Clever, including a kill off of a one-handed set by Rachel Go. Acalanes led 21-20 before Campolindo fought back to take a 24-21 lead. The Dons sided out and served an ace to get to 23-24 but were unable to stop an attack by the Cougars and lost the first set 23-25.
Acalanes came out energized at the start of the second set and took an early lead behind kills by Sarah Nelson and Lexie Fraser. Campolindo stepped up their defense and used a series of tips and roll shots to get back into the set and tie it up at 15-15. The Dons then went on a run behind the serving of Roxy Cummings and blocks from Riana Buchman assisted by Sarah Nelson to lead 20-15. However, the Cougars sided out and went on a serving run of their own to close Acalanes’ lead to 20-19. Acalanes settled down and had clutch kills by Samantha Darin and Roxy Cummings coupled with digs by Kaitlyn McKendall, Zoe McPhail, Hannah Edwards and Rachel Go to get to 24-23. Elsa Clever then aced the Cougars to end the set 25-23.
In the pivotal third set, the Dons got behind early 1-4 but battled back to 6-8. After a couple errors, Acalanes started getting on a roll with solid setting from Rachel Go and Kaitlyn Enrici to outside hitters, Samantha Darin and Roxy Cummings, and serving by Elsa Clever, Hannah Edwards and Zoe McPhail to throw the Cougars off balance and move ahead 10-9. After exchanging points and with support from the loud Acalanes cheering section and Varsity Team, the entire Dons team raised their game and ran off the last four points to win the third set 15-11 and take the match!
With the thrilling victory, Acalanes completed a season sweep of Campolindo and moved to 6-1 in league play (14-3 overall).
