Oct 20 – JV Girls Tennis: Acalanes 9 – Los Lomas 0
The Lady Dons swept Las Lomas today 9 – 0. Following the excellent advice of Negro Leagues great and Major League pitcher Satchel Paige: “Don’t look back. Something might be gaining on you” – all of our lines got off to good starts and did not look back to let their opponents into the match.
Vivian Toni and Kelly Min set the pace for Acalanes at D-1 by recording a fine 8-2 victory. Vivian and Kelly played solidly from the first game, which began during team introductions at the request of Las Lomas. At D-2, Sammy Browne once again stepped up to fill in and partnered with Alex Awwad to an 8-5 win. Sammy and Alex were involved in the most competitive match of the day.
Also answering the call for a sub, Maggie Curless steeped into the lineup at noon today as Skyler DeMartini’s partner at D-3. Skyler and Maggie played very well together and cruised to an 8-2 victory. Claire Terentieff and Lucy Nguyen overcame some early unforced errors to take command of line D-4 and record an 8-3 Acalanes win.
Jess Gerson and Olivia Towery made some early adjustments due to the sun and their opponents playing style to keep the Acalanes ball rolling with an 8-4 win. Olivia and Jess displayed terrific sportsmanship throughout the match, with Olivia going so far as to give her opponent a hair tie when the Las Lomas player needed one.
At D-6 Molly Cronk and Sophia Scipi jumped out to a 6-1 lead before I could walk around the court to check in with them. Sophia and Molly maintained their focus to record a convincing 8-1 victory. Sophia Lindgren and Emily Klein overcame some questionable line calls and kept their focus on their games to come home winners at 8-4. Also having to deal with debatable line calls, Milena Lucey and Sally Tang showed great tenacity in rolling over their Las Lomas opponents 8-1.
Showing great good sportsmanship at D-9, Shannon McVay and Lauren Craig were matched against complete beginners from Las Lomas. The initial plan to team a Las Lomas beginner with one of their better players did not work out and Shannon and Lauren found themselves across the net from girls who are just learning the game. Both Lauren and Shannon assisted the Lady Knights in keeping score, switching sides and were generally supportive of their opponents. Coach Katie and I could not be prouder of the way our D-9 girls handled themselves on their way to an 8-0 shut out.
Since Las Lomas could not field their tenth line Olivia Olson and Lia Swan played an exhibition match against the D-3 team from Las Lomas. Olivia played really well at the net and Lia ran down a number of balls in a truly competitive match that Las Lomas pulled out 8-2.
With this win, we improve to 7-4 overall and 5-3 in DFAL play.
