The end of the season may be coming near, but the Acalanes Dons Freshman Girls Volleyball team keeps bringing the heat with another victory, this time against Miramonte, beating their cross-town rivals in two sets, 25-8, 25-17. Game one was all about offense, including a ten-point service run by Alta Paladino. When the serve was returned, kills by Dana Piercy, Janine Jaber, Taylor Odom and Katie McCarty fed from sets by Dory Grobeck, shut the Mats down quickly. Ying Stroebe, fresh from being named Most Valuable Player at the St.Patrick-St. Vincent tournament, led defense with skilled passing and quick digs. Dons take the first game, 25-8.
Game two saw the Mats reorganizing to face Acalanes, and Miramonte managed to gain a slight lead during the first part of the set. However, nice service aces by Holly Fleischman quickly brought the score to the Dons side. Additional aces by Jillian Wickline, and Paladino kept the lead firmly in Acalanes court. Kills by Claire Amaral, Lily Bauer, Odom, Wickline and McCarty off sets by Fleischmann expanded the Dons lead. Tips by Holly Gillar, Fleischmann, a nice back row kill by Paladino and a service run by Wickline sealed the win for the Dons, 25-17.
The Dons will play their final match Thursday at Acalanes against Dublin.
