The Lady Dons rolled into Saturday’s championship game vs Drake trying to win their first NCS title in 15 years under Coach Misha Buchel.
Coach had his young squad ready to play in the first quarter with a scoring attack led by Sophmore Lexi Rowell‘s 3 goals and Senior Maddie Stewart in her final game for the Dons lobbing a crafty little shot over the keeper to put the Dons up 4-0.
Second quarter Drake capitalized on some scrappy inside shots and scored two goals. 4-2 Acalanes at half.
Drake came out tough in the third scoring a quick goal to close the lead to 4-3. Dons Sophomore Kylie Walker responded with a fantastic bar in low corner shot from way outside. Drake wouldn’t be denied with their amazing goal from 7 meters out. The players, fans and coaches knew they were in for a dogfight in the fourth. End of 3 Dons 5 – Drake 4
The Dons worked the ball into all league star Lexi Rowell one more time and she hammered the ball into the back of the net opening up a lead 6-4 with 4 minutes to play. Drake was not going away as their star player made a miracle high corner shot closing the gap to 6-5. With the place going nuts freshman Zoe Benisek made a great pass to fellow freshman Brooke Westphal who hit a high corner shot to finish off Drake 7-5 with 2 minutes left. A flurry of desperation shots were all blocked by star goalie Ella Maisano. Maisano had another amazing game stopping 14 shots including a 5 meter attempt.
The buzzer went off and the coaches and players all jumped in the pool celebrating their first NCS win in 15 years.
