Plenty of goals and first loss of the season to start 2012!
The Dons had a busy schedule this first week of the New Year with 2 non-league games vs College Park and San Ramon Valley as well as a DFAL game versus local rivals Miramonte. Hosts to College Park, the Dons didn’t wait to open the festivities and gave a lesson of offensive prowess to the visitors, scoring 6 goals in the first 40 minutes for an easy 7-1 win. Seniors Jacob Carroll and Austin DeBack scored twice, with senior Aidan Maguire, juniors Nick Warren and Ben Croze adding one each.
The second game of the week vs Miramonte was the occasion to see in action the last two undefeated teams in the Diablo Foothill Athletic League. After a long period of observation, Acalanes finally found the net with junior Dan Glascock after 30′ on an assist by DeBack. A few minutes later, Glascock again added a second goal following a pass from sophomore Max Mirner. The Dons continued their pressure in the second half but the score sheet would stay unchanged: 2-0 win.
For their last game of the week, Acalanes was visiting an always tough San Ramon Valley team. Playing with a lot of determination, the hosts took the lead after 15 minutes. But Glascock would respond 10 minutes later for the Dons with an accurate and low shot from 20 yards (his specialty!!!). SRV reacted quickly, putting a lot of pressure on the visitors and added two goals, one before and one after the break. At 3-1, the hosts looked in total control of the game… until DeBack took advantage of a ball floating in the penalty box (70′) to show his sense of the goal and score his 10th goal of the season. With one goal down, everything was possible and the Acalanes players stepped-up their game but couldn’t tie the game and it was San Ramon Valley that would add a last goal. Final score: 2-4 loss.
With 11 games played and an overall record of 7-1-3 (4-0-1, DFAL), the Dons are entering this week and the second half of their season, with again 3 games on the menu, at Dublin on Wednesday (6:15pm), at Las Lomas on Friday (6:15pm) and at Clayton Valley on Saturday (6pm). It will be interesting to see how the Dons react to that first loss. See you there… Go Dons!
