May 15 – Ladies Varsity Lacrosse wins NCS Quarterfinals 17-5

What you need to know first is that there are 50 minutes of playing time for every Girls High School lacrosse game. Our Lady Dons had to play 36 of those minutes down one player. In spite of this deficit our Ladies held Justin Siena High School from Napa to 5 total points, and shut them out completely in the second half.

How did this happen, you ask? Our officials were very generous, overzealous may be a better word, with yellow cards early in the game. During the first 11 minutes of play our Ladies were awarded 4 yellow cards in total. When a player receives two, the player is out for the game which means “man down.”

Here are the highlights. In the first half our Dons and Justin Siena traded goals and the score was close, even tied at 3-3 at the 18:07 mark. Then the fourth yellow card was awarded and our Dons seemed to realize that this game needed to pick up offensively. Our girls got to work scoring 8 more goals in the first half, bringing the score to 11-5. In addition, our Dons cleaned up on defense and did not incur the official’s yellow card wrath again. Sabba Jweainat was outstanding in the goal and had 7 saves.

In the second half defense continued to be solid and Acalanes did not allow another goal. Sam Repstad had 4 crucial saves in the goal. Acalanes held possession of the ball and when they didn’t have the ball the defense caused some key turnovers. Blake Balfrey had a brilliant interception and so did Sophie Ross. Jessica Hennies wrecked havoc, as usual, scooping up 3 loose ground balls. Caroline Newman hustled for 4 key balls as well. All in all, our Ladies scored 6 in the second half, bringing the score to 17-5 and an NCS play off win.
