Dec 14 – Soccer Dons win again

Acalanes 3, Dougherty Valley 0
We’re starting to see a theme in the boys varsity soccer team as yet again their defense and goalie earned a shut out with their smothering defense and safe handling. After starting fairly evenly the game opened up 9 minutes in when senior Graham Lindgren, utilized his very long throw to great effect. He pumped the ball from the sideline to the far post, the ball fell to the feet of senior Dan Glascock, who’s slightly miss hit shot trickled over the goal line. On 23 minutes, junior Mark Helfrich, hit the post with a snap shot, the ball bounced kindly across the goal to sophomore Kaj Simonson, who wasted no time finding the net from close range.
Halftime 2-0 Acalanes.

While the Don’s cruised in the second, Dougherty Valley’s senior Anoop Gala, using his pace and skill, often presented a challenge for the Acalanes defense. On 57 minutes, senior Ben Croze pounced on a loose ball at the edge of the box and shot neatly into the corner for the Don’s 3rd and final goal. For the rest of the game the Don’s kept the ball well using some fine possession skills. Before sophomore Wilson Hall put a fine header just wide of the goal, he’d initiated a lovely passing sequence with seniors, Stuart Lee and Dan Glascock, the three kept the ball between them as they worked up the left side of the field culminating in a cross for Hall’s header. That play highlighted the passing skills of this year’s team and their ability to keep ball on the ground and play through the midfield. The Don’s passing and defending skills combined will surely keep them in games when facing stronger competition.

Next up, Acalanes v Bullard at De La Salle in a show case event, Saturday, Dec 15 at 3:00 PM.
