Mar 5 – Acalanes Varsity Lacrosse Girls’ Season Opener

Similar to all 6 past championship AHS Girls Lax teams, pre-league started with a tough match against a deep with talent Monte Vista squad, who already had a win under their belts, whereas last night’s game was AHS’ first of the season.

The good news about last night’s game: AHS’ new Head Varsity Coach Katie Mitchell and her Assistant Laura Harris guided their team well and AHS improved dramatically in snagging first possessions (Draw Controls) over last year’s match v. MV.

Opening with #54 Sophie Ross‘ first goal of the game, had MV playing catch up in the back and forth during the first 9 possessions. Other goal-makers were #9 Caroline Newman, #5 Ellie Higgins, #4 Caith Wright, and again #54 Sophie Ross, when she drilled in a Free Position shot. Score was AHS 5 – MV 4 when MV called a time out.

Regrouped and restrategized, MV then took the next 5 draws and scored the next 5 goals, (aided by several AHS turnovers including a bizarre call on an AHS mouthguard!) to pull ahead 5 – 9.

Before the end of the first half, an intense back and forth during which each team stole possession from the other, culminated in #5 Ellie Higgins picking the ball out of an even more intense scrum in front of MV’s goal, and scoring.
Score was AHS 6 – MV 9 at the half.
The second half was equally hard fought, however MV’s depth, aided by more AHS turnovers, meant AHS could not close the gap. Final score AHS 8 – MV 15.
Now that opening game jitters are over, we’ll see how AHS does v. cross town rival Las Lomas at home next Tuesday, March 10. JV at 5:30 and varsity at 7:00 pm. Come to the games and find out!
