Mar 25 – Girls Lacrosse win in Sudden Death OT
In a Friday night thriller at Acalanes, the Lady Dons delivered the final blow to the visiting Las Lomas Knights with fewer than two seconds left to go in the first overtime period, taking the game in sudden death play.
Katie Welch stormed her way to the goal after several free position shots were stopped, went wide or were called back for shooting space violations. Welch found the net after a game in which she covered both ends of the field aggressively, picking up five loose balls and putting constant pressure on the Las Lomas offense.
Julia Mueller had been driving the Dons game up until then with four goals, and Susie Bush added two, with the final goal coming from Sophie Ross. Ross continued her strong play in the center circle with five draw controls and was the frequent target of Las Lomas defensive players, including an illegal check that sent her to the sidelines for several minutes. Trainer extraordinaire Chris Clark had her back on the field for the last ten seconds of the first half. Goalie Sam Repstad had five saves with a couple at close range from Las Lomas’s fast break offense.
Most of the regular fans proclaimed it one of the most exciting games they had seen in girls lacrosse.
The Dons head south to Dublin to continue league play Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
