Oct 13 – JV Girls Tennis: Acalanes 4 – Campolindo 3
The Lady Dons JVs edged the Cougars of Campolindo 4 – 3 in a close match in unseasonably hot weather. While the calendar read October 13, the thermometer was well into the 90s. Doe Steinbrecher and Sammy Browne recorded the first Acalanes point at D-4 by taking control of the match early and finishing with an 8-4 win. Although Doe was hit early in the match by a Campo shot, she and Sammy held their ground and the lead.
At D-5 Niki Palamountain and Skyler DeMartini jumped out to an early 5-2 lead only to see their opponents come back and get into the match at 5-4. Niki and Skyler held their focus and their serve to emerge 8-6 winners. Getting out to an even bigger lead at D-6, Molly Cronk and Meena Neelakadan were enjoying a 7-1 advantage only to see their opponents cut the margin to 7-5, before Molly and Meena closed them out. Niki, Skyler, Molly and Meena all played really well when the momentum shifted to their opponents. It is easy to get down on yourself or your partner when your opponents begin reeling off wins, but both or D-5 and D-6 teams dug in and secured much-needed points for the Lady Dons.
As they did in our first match at Campo, Maddie McDonagh and Maggie Curless played a tense, competitive, match at D-2 to ensure the Acalanes win. Despite Maggie getting drilled by a Cougar volley, she and Maddie fought hard to earn a thrilling 9-7 victory. Maggie may have the first honest tennis ball bruise of the 2015 season.
This win by the Lady Dons avenges our earlier 3-7 loss at Campo and demonstrates the improvement made by the JV team this season. Our record improves to 5-3 overall and puts us back at .500 in the DFAL with a 3-3 record.
