Oct 29 – JV Girls Tennis: Acalanes 10 – Miramonte 3

The Lady Dons ended the 2015 JV tennis season with a convincing win over rival Miramonte 10-3. For the second time this season, we stomped the Mats! In a season that seems to have flown past, the JV Lady Dons compiled a fine 11-4 record overall. Our 7-3 league record assures us a second place finish in the Diablo Foothill Athletic League.

Niki Palamountain and Skyler DeMartini playing at D-3 started the Acalanes scoring with an 8-2 win over Miramonte opponents who had beaten them 2-8 in our first match. This turnaround from Niki and Skyler is indicative of the type of improvement that we have seen throughout the season from all of the JV Lady Dons. Playing at D-1 Maggie Curless and Maddie McDonagh continued their strong play and winning ways by recording an 8-4 victory. Maddie was named the JV Lady Dons’ Most Valuable Player at our post-season party.

At D-2, Captains Claire Terentieff and Hayley Gotellli played a fine match before bowing 6-8 to a fine Miramonte duo. Molly Cronk and Sophia Scipi at D-4 came back from 0-40 to 6-7 before their opponents could claim a 6-8 win.

Jessica Gerson and Olivia Towery played a terrific match against a D-5 Miramonte team that could have played at D-1 or D-2. With Jess controlling the net and Olivia the backcourt, the Acalanes tandem recorded a fine 8-6 win. Sammy Browne and Captain Doe Steinbrecher dug out of a 0-4 hole before Miramonte could claim a point at 4-8.

Remarkably, the remaining Acalanes lines from D-7 to D-13 swept the Lady Mats. At D-7, Captain Alex Awwad and Meena Neelakadan got out to an early lead and did not let their opponents into the match on their way to an 8-2 win. Lauren Craig and Shannon McVay at D-8 got off to a slow start at 0-2, but battled their way to a 4-3 lead and held on to achieve an 8-5 win. Lauren and Shannon won the seventh Acalanes point of the day, thus ensuring a Lady Dons’ victory in our final match of the year.

At D-9, Emily Klein and Sophia Lindgren meshed their games effectively to secure a hard won point with an 8-6 win. This set saw really intense rallies and a number of deuce games that Sophia and Emily were able to convert. Captains Alexia Lucey and Lucy Nguyen played really well together in their final JV outing, besting their Miramonte foes 8-4.

Playing at D-11, our Sophomore/Freshman combo of Sally Tang and Milena Lucey got and early lead and did not relinquish it on their way to an 8-3 win. Sally’s serve was tremendously effective and set up a number of put away volleys for Milena at the net.

As she did earlier this week against Alhambra, Olivia Olson hung a bagel on her opponents. Playing today with Lia Swan at D-12, Olivia served effectively while racing to an 8-0 victory. Playing in her last JV match, Lia volleyed away the set point with a clean winner to clinch the Acalanes point.

Since we did not have a 13th line, Jess Gerson and Sophia Scipi agreed to “double back” and play a second set against a fine pair of Miramonte players. Sophia served and patrolled the backcourt effectively while Jess played a second strong set as a “net monster” and recorded the final Acalanes point of the 2015 season at 8-5.

As they have all season, each of our lines competed effectively and with great integrity. The JV Lady Dons represented Acalanes High School wonderfully well during the entire course of the 2015 season. Go Dons!
