Jun 4 – Track State Championships

Julia Lyons competed in the State Track and Fields Championships this past Friday. The temperatures were so hot (106) that the meet was delayed by CIF hopefully to attract a lower temperature during competition. Mostly to the benefit of the distance runners, but regardless, all the athletes felt the heat. The temperature at competition was still over 100.

This capped a very successful season for Julia, one of the best in 25 plus years. She finished the season 2nd in the all-time list in the long jump, 100 and 200. She is going to attend Boston College with a 50% scholarship, and it took Julia only 1 1/2 seasons of track and field to put herself in a position to receive that scholarship. This may seem that it was easy for Julia, but the fact is, she spent 3 months during the summer lifting weights 4 days a week, and continued lifting throughout the season. Basically hard work. Her accomplishments were earned, as well as her appearance at the State Championships.

After the meet Julia expressed her enjoyment of competing as the highest level of high school track and field, the State Championship. Out of 35 jumpers, she finished 16th and missing finals by four places. She had three jumps, 17′ 5, 17′ 2. and 17′ 8′ 3/4,
