After two easy wins earlier in the week, the Acalanes Dons Soccer Team ended this year’s tournament with two ties, first on Thursday vs Antioch (1-1), then again on Saturday vs Albany (2-2). In the first game, Acalanes dominated, had a lot of chances to score but couldn’t beat an excellent goalkeeper in the visiting ranks. The deliverance finally came in the 59 minutes with a well-taken penalty kick from sophomore Max Mirner. Unfortunately, that advantage was short-lived and 3 minutes later, Antioch was also awarded a penalty kick and tied the game. The score would not change.
Against Albany, the Dons started very slowly and quickly paid the price. 0-2 at half-time. The second half showed more determination from the local players who found the net at the 65 minute with a brilliant header from junior Nick Warren on an excellent cross by senior Bryan Berlier. Five minutes later, Acalanes added a second goal on another header, this time by senior Sina Bagheri at the reception of senior George Walker’s cross. The Dons finished the game strong but couldn’t find another opening. Final score: 2-2.
This coming week, Acalanes starts DFAL league play with Las Lomas at home on Wednesday and a visit at defending NCS champion Campolindo on Friday. Both games start @ 6:15pm. See you there… Go Dons!
