California Coast Classic Results
On 12/27 and 12/28 the Acalanes Wrestling Team continued its outstanding season by traveling to Aptos to compete in the 47th annual California Coast Wrestling Classic, one of the most important and longest running holiday wrestling tournaments in California. 75 teams from 6 sections competed at this years tournament and Acalanes had its strongest showing ever. The team had three wrestlers go undefeated on the first day of the tournament. Tai White, Jeremy Ridge, and Axel Jurgens all advanced to the quarterfinals and Kyle Hulsey and Tony Correa also advanced to the second day.
Jeremy Ridge moved up a weight class to wrestle at 152 pounds. Over the two days he defeated the 18th, 24th and 36th ranked wrestlers in the state, recorded four Falls and two Major Decisions while going 5-1 to take 2nd place. Axel Jurgens made the semi-finals at 160 pounds and become Acalanes second ever Coast Classic medalist by placing fifth. Tai White recorded three falls on the first day of the tournament to reach the quarterfinals at 132 pounds before unfortunately having to withdraw from the tournament due to illness. In Just his first year of wrestling Kyle Hulsey had a fantastic tournament. He had three wins by Fall and lost a close 3-1 match to one of the top heavyweights in the state. Kyle was one match from placing and scored 12 team points. Ben Ross went 2-2 while scoring important team points. Tyler Sverak won his first match at the Coast Classic. Ben Krey, Ed Gray, and Tony Correa all first year wrestlers had great matches in their first big two day tournament. Acalanes finished in 15 place out of the 75 teams. If Tai had not had to withdraw Acalanes would have easily finished in the top ten.
This is always a fantastic bonding experience for the team. The wrestlers enjoyed the hotel hot tub, video games in their rooms and big team dinners. It was a great couple of days for the program.
