Feb 24 – Girls Basketball Advances to NCS Semi-Final Round

The Lady Dons won a thriller in the second round of NCS playoffs Friday night 69 to 67 over Redwood.  It was a game of many momentum swings throughout.  The Dons raced out to an 8 point lead after one quarter.  The lead didn’t last long, as the resilient Redwood squad fought back and closed the gap to 1 point at halftime.  Momentum changed again in the 3rd quarter with Emma Godfrey asserting herself in the paint and an aggressive full court press being unleashed.

The Lady Dons established a 10 point lead late in the 3rd, however, the tables turned again when Emma Godfrey picked up her 4th foul and then a technical which disqualified her for the rest of the game.  Redwood wasted no time storming back and built a lead as large as 6 points in the 4th quarter.  Finally, Roni Marrone and Brooke Panfili took over the game late in the 4th quarter and willed their way to victory.  Brooke Panfili was the high scorer on the night with 21 points, while Emma Godfrey added 18, Roni Marrone dropped 15 points, and Lauren Kobashigawa contributed 11 points.  The Lady Dons move on to play Montgomery Wednesday night in Santa Rosa.

If you were not there, you missed the epic battle in the NCS semifinal game.  It was everything that was expected as the #2 seeded boys soccer team battled #3 seeded Richmond HS into overtime.  Drew Wondolowski scored an incredible goal in the first half.  With his back to the net, he kicked the ball over his head, over the goalkeeper and into the far corner of the goal. Richmond would not go down quietly.  They evened the score in the second half to force overtime. The first overtime ended with no score.  With four minutes left in the second overtime, Bryan Bamford fed Gabe Singer for the winning goal that propels the Dons into the NCS Championship game.

Chris Rogers and Drew Wondolowski were named “Men of the Match.”  As witnessed all season, goalkeeper Luke Denham made several outstanding saves and was buoyed by strong defensive play by the entire team.
