Apr 12 – Track Results

Thursday’s meet was about what could have been and what is, and what this means.

The boys lost the meet to Clayton Valley 77-52, and Clayton Valley is one of the best or the best boys team in the section. Acalanes, who has been battling injuries and college visits, was down 16 possible points before the meet started. If we had those points, we could have won the meet. But what does this really mean? It means that the Acalanes boys team is positioning themselves to make a statement in the post season as one of the premier track and field programs in NCS, when we are again 100% strong.

The girls continue to show that they are one of the top programs in NCS. They defeated Clayton Valley 87-49 and they continue to grow as a program. This group is young and talented and continue to seek improvements in their team and individual performances.

We had 37 personal records yesterday and I will detail the highlights, but to see the complete list of athlete PR’s see the attached below.

Keaziah Smith burns a hole in the track by running a PR 11.12 in the 100, and runs the third fastest 100 in school history. There were 7 PR’s in the 100 overall. Muppy ∫ becomes the third Acalanes female athlete to jump over 18′ (18’1.5) in the last three years. Why this is significant? We have only had 3 athletes jump over 18′ prior to 2015 in school history. Alex Haase running in only her second varsity meet, runs a PR 14.38 and scores her first varsity point. The distance group is showing promise for the future with freshmen Dominic Basaldua (2 PR’s), Nicole Figone, Taylor Hill, Lena Johnson, Binti Sohn continuing to get better with each meet. What is impressive about this group is that they are racing, and not just running laps at pace. The boys varsity long jumpers had five PR’s with Chris Rogers jumping 20′ 10.25. Joshua Starr returning from a long illness, is showing weekly improvement and runs 2:23.45 in 800. The girls throwing events step up in the shot / discus where Maddy Kalil, Karen Rosenburg and Ann Thiselton-Dyer sweep both events. Mari Florine, not pole vaulting in a year, steps up and clears 9′ for second.

Unified Sports are members of the track team. When we go into the championship season, they will be scored just like any event we run, and they can contribute to our success as a team.

In past March and April weekend action …

These past two weekends the Acalanes track and Field Team competed at the Stanford Invitational and the Arcadia Invitational. At Stanford Invitational, colleges and high schools compete at the same event, but it is actually two different meets at the same event. The Arcadia Invitational is a high school meet only, but attracts the best talent in the country and outside. This year we had a very limited number of entries in both of these meets largely due to the fact that the meets were during spring break and due to injuries.

At Stanford, Ryan Nall competed in the Shot and Discus, Johnny Choi in the HJ, Muppy Gragg, Mikalea Troung, Emily Sverak and Mari Florine in the 4 x 400, and Emily Sverak, Scarlette McCullough, Beth Hamalian and Mari Florine in the 4x 100.

Ryan threw a personal best of 148′ 1″ in the discus; the 4 x 100 ran a personal best for these four girls (and a season best for the 4 x 100) 51.50; and the 4 x 400 ran a season best of 4:05.72 with Mikaela running a PR split of 61, Emily running a SPR of 62 and Muppy running a SPR of 56.6. In the high jump Johnny cleared 6’2″.

Arcadia Invitational is a two day meet but is like four meets in one. On Friday and Saturday they have the multi events where the boys compete in the decathlon and girls in the heptathlon. These events are not sanctioned by CIF, specifically the javelin, so this event is run by USA Track and Field Officials and not high school officials. Then there is the Friday night meet which consist mostly of relays of all kinds. The Saturday day meet is like an open invitational where they run three heats of everything and is a complete meet; and the Saturday night meet is strictly an invitational, and it is the best of the best that compete.

We had only two athletes at Arcadia, Johnny Choi in the high jump and he cleared 6’1 3/4; and Muppy Gragg in the heptathlon. Muppy competed in seven events over the two days. On Friday she competed in the 100 hurdles where she ran a personal best of 15.65; the high jump 5’1.75″; the shot put 28′; and the 200 where she ran a personal best of 25.26 (second on the all time leaderboard at Acalanes). On Saturday Muppy longed jump 17’6′; threw the javelin 78’5″ (which had to be competed off site due to CIF rules); and ran the 800M with a personal best of 2:18.65. In this event there were 16 athletes from California, Montana, Georgia, Canada, and Mexico.  Last year at this event Muppy finished 10th and scored 4190 points. This year Muppy scored 4632 points and finished 3rd.

In Tuesday’s action…

The baseball team plays Miramonte HS at 4:00.  Varsity is home and JV is away.

The varsity softball team hosts Antioch HS and the JV team is at Northgate HS, both at 4:00.

The boys tennis team has a match against Miramonte HS at 3:30.  Varsity is home and JV is away.
