Freshman Girls Volleyball – Oct 19

Freshman Girls Volleyball – by Hunter Davis

October 19 – The Acalanes Freshman Girls Volleyball team took on Las Lomas on Thursday, amid the balloons and posters of the “Dig Pink” cancer awareness and prevent fundraising campaign. The festive atmosphere carried on into the early part of the match as the home team jumped out to a quick lead on kills from Lyla Cox, Lauren Davis and Daisy Sibley, all from setter Megan Go. Libby Ross came in with a streak of serves early, along with some nice digs, while libero Sydney Sowarby’s defensive play helped the team keep possession. Lyla added several aces, drawing acclaim from local volleyball enthusiast Dan Meade. The Dons continued their strong perfomance and nailed down a 25-8 game one victory.

Set two started out more balanced with the Knights taking a 6-5 lead early. Daisy put the Dons on top again 8-6 with two aces, outsides Carly Coffee and Audrey Passalacqua put hits down and Lyla stuffed an over-pass to stretch the lead to 11-7. Samantha Hansen added three quick points and another Carly kill made it 15-9. Las Lomas held tough fighting off difficult serves from Chloe Wu and Maren Takeuchi to get the match to 20-16. The Dons regained the momentum, and a great dig from Chloe on the last point led to a kill from Samantha to secure a 25-17 victory.

Freshman Girls Volleyball – Oct 17

Freshman Girls Volleyball – by Hunter Davis

October 17 – On Tuesday, the Acalanes Freshman Girls Volleyball squad traveled to Moraga to take on Campolindo. There was a rivalry feel in the air, though the Cougars did not enjoy the strong fan support the Dons mustered for their home matchup. Campo did use the home court advantage to jump out to a 7-1 lead before a kill and ace from Lauren Davis stopped the bleeding at 7-3. Two phenomenal digs from libero Sydney Sowarby and strong serving from outside Carly Coffee and Maren Takeuchi gave the Dons their first lead at 9-8. The teams traded points until 16-15 which included a nice tip from middle Samantha Hansen off a set from Bella Draper and some great serves from Lyla Cox. Campo surged to a 22-17 lead before two kills from Lauren Davis, on Audrey Passalaqua assists (subbing in at setter for an ill Megan Go) and great defense from Sydney Sowarby got it back to 22-21. In the end the Cougars pulled it off 25-21.

The Dons had a better start to the second set as the teams went back and forth to a 7-7 tie, highlighted by a back corner kill from Audrey Passalacqua and some nice defense from Daisy Sibley. Libby Ross and Chloe Wu each put down some nice serves in the second game as the Dons fought to forge a comeback from 19-8 down, but the hosts held on for a 25-14 victory.
