In this last week of the regular season, the Dons clinched a second consecutive DFAL title (their 3rd in four years!) and earned a #1 seed for the North Coast Section Championship. On Monday, they tied an always competitive Bishop O’Dowd squad 1-1. One goal down since the beginning of the game, the Acalanes players worked hard to come back and were rewarded 5 minutes before time by Austen Grassini (Aidan Maguire assist).
Two days later at Miramonte (DFAL), the Dons showed a lot of patience against a very disciplined team and finally opened the score at the hour mark on a sizzling run by Maguire on a pass from Max Mirner, A few minutes later, George Walker exploited a “huge” blunder by the Miramonte defense to make it 2-0. An important win that – along with a Campolindo loss that night – made the DFAL title official for the Dons.
On Friday, for their last DFAL game, the already “chosen” Dons were hosting Dublin with the intention to keep their unbeaten league record. As expected, the game was intense and tight (0-0 at the half) but it was Dublin who would end up with the win (3-1). Dan Glascock scored the lone goal for Acalanes (his 15th!) on a beautiful shot from 25 yards.
With an overall record of 12-2-8 (8-1-3 DFAL), the Dons now enter the NCS playoffs with the top seed and will face #16 St Mary’s in the first round on Wednesday at home (7pm). See you there… Go Dons!
