The Acalanes Freshman Boys Basketball Team Defeats Las Lomas With A Buzzer Beating Three Point Shot, 48-47

WOW!!!  What a way to end the basketball season!!

In a game where neither team held a lead greater than four points, you knew the game would be decided in the last few possessions of the 4th quarter…and it was.  The final one minute and ten seconds of this game was not for the weak at heart.  It included made free throws, missed free throws, terrible turnovers, lay-ups and three clutch 3 point shots.  The Dons tried their very best to give this game away in the final 60 seconds.  But in the end, the young men from Acalanes prevailed.

Talk about a close game from start to finish: at the end of the 1st quarter, the score was tied, 11-11; at halftime, the Knights led the Dons, 22-24; and at the end of three-quarters, the Knights still led the Dons, 35-33; however, at the end of 4th quarter, the Dons would have the last laugh.

About a tenth of a second before the final horn sounded to end the 4th quarter, the ball from Alex Kinnear’s 3-point shot swished through the basket giving the Freshman Dons an unbelievable 48-47 victory over Las Lomas.  As the shot hit home and the horn echoed through the gym, the home crowd erupted in cheers and the Acalanes bench, coaches included, rushed the floor to mob Kinnear and celebrate the amazing win.  It was all smiles at Acalanes last night.

There were a lot of special individual performances that took place in this game.  However, this game was won because the Dons played excellent team defense in the second half and rebounded well as a collective unit throughout the entire game.

The big men for Acalanes played beautifully on both ends of the floor against the Knights.  Joey Christensen, coming off a great game at Campolindo, put together another strong effort for the Dons scoring 10 points and hauling-in 7 rebounds.  Matt Mesetz was stellar for the Dons, scoring 12 points, grabbing 9 rebounds and blocking 3 shots.  This may have been Matt’s best all around game of the season.

Andrew McKendell played all 32 minutes for the Dons at point guard.  During his time on the floor, Andrew put together another very solid performance scoring 8 points, dishing-out 7 assist and collecting 4 steals.  Andrew hit a deep three pointer to give Acalanes its first lead in the 4th quarter 42-40, with just 1:10 to go.  That shot kicked-off the jaw-dropping final one minute of play.  Alex Kinnear, the star of the night, delivered 13 points for the Dons – eight of them in the 4th quarter and six of them within the final 16.9 seconds of the game.  Within that same 16.9 seconds, Kinnear went from goat to hero for the Dons.  Alex bounced back after his ill-advised cross court pass was intercepted by a Las Lomas defender and taken in for a lay-up with 17 seconds to go, giving Las Lomas the lead 44-42.  Seemingly unphased, Kinnear hit a tough 3 point shot with 6 seconds remaining to cut the Knight’s lead to 46-45.  After Las Lomas could only convert one of two free throws with 5.9 seconds on the clock, McKendell took the inbounds pass and raced the ball down the court, found Kinnear open in the deep corner, and Alex turned around and let the shot fly…Acalanes buzzer beater goes BOOM!!  The Dons win 48-47.

This was a fantastic way for the Freshman Dons to conclude their basketball season.  The victory over Las Lomas snapped a three game losing streak for the Dons and gave them a win they will remember for a long time.  The Freshman Dons finished their pre-season with a record of 8-8 and last night they completed DFAL play with a record of 3-8.  This gives the Acalanes Freshman Boys Basketball Team an overall record of 11-16 on the season.

Thank you to Coach Sariby and Coach Combi for your tremendous effort and commitment to the Freshman Boys Program.  It will not be forgotten.  As always…GO DONS!!!

The Freshman Dons would like to win this Las Lomas rematch for Jack, for themselves and for their loyal fans. See you tonight at the home of the Dons for this season finale – Acalanes Dons vs. Las Lomas Knights, tip-off at 5:30pm.  As always, Go Dons!!!

Feb 12 – Acalanes Freshman Boys Basketball Team Loses an Exciting Game at Campolindo – 59 – 53

Having lost their home DFAL match-up with Campolindo by a score of 64-31 back on January 22nd, the Acalanes Freshman Boys Basketball team was looking for a more competitive game against their Lamorinda rivals this past Tuesday night…and they found one.  After one quarter, it looked like it might be an encore performance of the first game as the Cougars raced-out to a 21-6 lead.  However, in the second quarter, the Dons made a steady charge, getting themselves back into the game by controlling the boards and knocking down both their shots and free throws.  At halftime, the Dons trailed by only 6 points, 29-23.

In the second half, the Dons and the Cougars played to a draw with both teams scoring exactly 30 points each.  The final score was Campolindo 59, Acalanes 53.  The Freshman Dons showed the Campolindo crowd that they can more than hang with the Cougars.  Unfortunately for the Dons, turnovers did them in…AGAIN.  19 turnovers in the game, with many leading to immediate points for the Cougars.  Cut that number in half and the Dons are victorious in this game.

Joey Christensen had his best game of the season, scoring 10 points and pulling down 10 rebounds – 4 of his points and 6 of his rebounds came during the Don’s pivotal 2nd quarter come back.

The Acalanes guards did their part to keep the scoreboard changing for the Dons.  Alex Kinnear found his shooting stroke dropping in 10 points from the floor.  Sam Lauth came off the bench and provided solid court play for Dons while chipping in 7 key points.  Andrew McKendell hit a couple of deep threes in the first half and added several slick drives to the basket in the second half to finish the game with 16 points.

The Freshman Dons have dropped their last three games.  They will look to snap this losing streak tonight, in their final game of the season versus the Knights of Las Lomas. Tip-off will take place at 5:30pm in Lafayette.  Go Dons!!

Feb 1 – Acalanes Freshman Boys Basketball Team Cruises to a 73-47 Victory Over Miramonte

In clearly their best overall team win this season, the Acalanes Freshman Boys Basketball Team took an early lead and never looked back as they pounded the Matadors of Miramonte, 73-47.  The Freshman Dons jumped-out to a 46-31 halftime lead and never took their collective feet off the gas putting up a season high, 73 points.

Over the past six games, the Freshman Dons have struggled offensively.  In Wednesday night’s loss at Dublin High, the Dons started breaking-out of their shooting slump.  On Friday night, it was home sweet home as every Don that touched the floor scored.  The key to the win was that the Dons were unselfish with the basketball and controlled the boards.

The big men for the Dons were tough for the Matadors to handle on Friday night.  Matt Clark posted 7 points and 2 rebounds; Joey Christensen dropped-in 11 points and pulled down 5 rebounds and had 2 assists; and Matt Mesetz tallied 15 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and blocked 2 shots.

However, it was the guards for the Dons that were too much for the Mats.  They pushed the offensive tempo all night and continually set-up the Dons big men for scoring opportunities.  Alex Kinnear had 9 points and 3 assists; Nathan Edwards scored 4 points and grabbed 6 rebounds; and Andrew McKendell dropped-in 13 points, dished out 7 assists, had 3 steals and pulled down 3 rebounds.

The Freshman Dons will play Dougherty Valley on Monday February 4th at 5:30pm at home.  Dougherty Valley embarrassed the Dons in their first match-up back on January 11th.  The Freshman Dons will be looking to get after the Wildcats in this rematch.  Go Dons!!

Campolindo and Acalanes met earlier this season in the Championship Game of the Ken Nelson Tournament, hosted by Campolindo.  The Cougars beat the Dons by 17 points in that championship show down.  Tonight will be the first of two DFAL match-ups between the Campolindo Cougars and the Acalanes Dons.  Please come and show your support.  Go Dons!!

Jan 9 – Freshman Boys Basketball Team Rallies To Beat Miramonte On The Road 45-42

It was not a stellar shooting night for the freshman Dons.  However, they made up for it with their tenacity on defense and controlling the boards in the second half of this contest.  The Dons down 24-16 at halftime, fell behind 15 points with 5 minutes remaining in the 3rd period, 33-18.  From that point on, the Dons held the Matadors of Miramonte scoreless for the remainder of the period and cut the Matador’s lead to 2 points going into the 4th quarter, 33-31.  In the 4th quarter, the Dons took control of the game.  Jack Thoren came alive, scoring 10 points including a step back 3 pointer late, to help seal the victory.  There were many that contributed in this come from behind victory for the freshman Dons: Nathan Edwards had 3 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals; Andrew McKendell had 4 points, 7 assists and 3 steals; Jack Thoren had 11 points, 4 assists and 2 steals; and the big men for the Dons, Matt Mesetz chipped in 9 points and 9 rebounds; and Joey Christensen contributed 10 points and ripped down 12 rebounds.

A close game at the end of the 1st quarter got away from the Freshman Dons, in the 2nd and 3rd quarters as the Gaels of Dublin cruised to a 77-53 victory. The deadly combination of cold shooting, poor rebounding and careless turnovers did the Dons in against an aggressive Dublin team.

The Don’s kept battling the Gaels until the final buzzer sounded which is a reflection of their two coaches, Ed Sariby and Rob CombiNathan Edwards got the Dons off to a hot start, scoring 7 points in the 1st quarter.
