Girls Volleyball
by Ken Webster

Your Acalanes Dons Girls Volleyball team kicked off 2017 DAL League play by hosting the arch-rival Campolindo Cougars on Thursday night in front of a big and boisterous crowd. The match found the defending D III State Champions still looking to find their 2017 identity, as they came in at 2-4 on the year but with a big win over Marin County powerhouse Redwood High last weekend. This stiff test from the Cougs – currently ranked 6th in the State in Division 3 – would surely push them to their limits and help them grow as a team. Here is some of the action:

First Set:

2-8. Timeout Dons after a very rocky start. Adrenaline is pumping and Coach Rodriguez looks to settle the Dons down.

3-10. Dons out of sync.

6-15. Sarah Westergren delivers a kill to get the Dons a much needed point.

7-18. Westergren fires another winner deep. Needed it.

2-2. Hayes Hollar drives a kill into the Campo middle.

3-6. Webster back set to Hollar at the “Oppo”. Kill. Dons now fighting with high energy.

4-8. Madi Risch pounds a ball straight down on the kill. With Authority.

6-10. Webster roof!

8-10. Risch on a serving run.

9-10. Webster drills an angle kill from the “Oppo” from the Rachel Go set. Timeout Cougs! The gym is rockin’.

10-11. Cailey McVay digs a tough serve and Go sets to Higgins beautifully, and Grace finishes it with a kill.

12s. Webster Ace!

13-12. Campo fires the ball long and the Dons re-take the lead!

14-12. Webster Ace again! Bullets.

14-15. Timeout Dons to break a little Campo momentum.

18-17. McVay Ace! Dons fight back once again. Resilient.

19-18. Risch block! McVay dig! Risch kill!

19-20. Kennedy Cornish slams down an overpass, but Campo keeps it alive and scores. See-saw battle this set.

20s. Hayes “Ain’t No Hollarback Girl” Hollar crushes a kill to re-tie it.

21s. Risch tools the blockers to re-tie it yet again. Dons playing great v-ball right now!

22s. Go with a buttery set to Higgins who eats it up. Tied again…

22-24. Timeout Dons…

23-24. Big Webster kill! Timeout Cougars. Let’s Go Dons!

24 all…24-25…25s! Elsa Clever stuffs a joust at the net. OT baby.

25-27. Dons fall in the 2nd set. Man!

Third Set:

1-0. Great D from Zoe McPhail and McVay (part of the McFamily) and then Clever delivers a big roof.

2-0. Clever again!

3-0. Risch kill on a roll shot.

4-3. Webster lofts a set from out of the net and gets it to Hollar for the kill.

6s. Go (“R-GO”) back sets Risch, who promptly crushes the kill into the middle of the court.

7-6. McPhail: great serve and then saves the point with a great dig. Back row passing by McPhail, McVay, Go and Sam Darin is on point.

9-14. Tough patch of road for the Dons-mobile. Timeout.

11-16. Clever on the slide kill. Needed it.

11-19. Campo executing and building momentum. Not helpful.

13-22. Timeout Acalanes. Campo still not helping.

14-22. Risch with a saving dig and Webster finishes it at the net.

17-24. Clever kills a “1” in the middle to keep the match alive.

18-24. McVay Ace! Yaaasssss.

19-24. Webster to Risch for the untouched Thunder Bomb Kill. Wow. Stirs memories of the incomparable Parker Jones…Happy Birthday Parker!

19-25. Dons fall in 3 to the Cougars, but it was an exciting match and the Dons will be fun to watch this season, so come on out to some games!

Freshman Girls Volleyball

Freshman Girls Volleyball
by Hunter Davis
September 21, 2017 – It was an exciting afternoon of volleyball as the Acalanes Freshman Lady Dons took on arch rival Campolindo.  The first set was tight early with strong blocking from Lauren Davis and Lyla Cox. The Dons used a serving streak from Lyla to break open a 10-5 lead, forcing Campo into an early timeout. The coaching move worked as the Cougars roared back to a 14-11 lead, but an equally well taken timeout from Coach Miranda Rodriguez along with solid serving from Sammy Hansen got the Dons back in the game. They kept it close on aggressive kills from Audrey Passalaqua and Carly Coffee, but could not take advantage of a late service run from Chloe Wu to drop the first game 20-25.
The second set may go down as the game of the season as neither team was able to build a lead, with 7+ lead changes. The Dons had great fan support from the JV and Varsity teams along with many others, and loud cheers of “Let’s go Dons” echoed throughout the gym at key moments highlighting this rivalry match. Back to back kills from Audrey Passalaqua and Lyla Cox on Megan Go assists gave the Dons the momentum and at 11-14, 4 straight points from Daisy Sibley gave the Dons the lead.  After falling behind 22-24 the team fought back with excellent defense, nice setting from Bella Draper, and clutch team serving to push the match on. Strong passing from libero Sydney Sowarby and Marin Takeuchi countered Campo’s service game, while scrambling defense from Lauren Davis kept points alive as the tension ramped up. In the end, a few breaks allowed the Cougars to pull off a 30-28 victory in the second set, but it was a great match from both teams.
