California Coast Classic Results
On 12/27 and 12/28 the Acalanes Wrestling Team continued its outstanding season by traveling to Aptos to compete in the 47th annual California Coast Wrestling Classic, one of the most important and longest running holiday wrestling tournaments in California. 75 teams from 6 sections competed at this years tournament and Acalanes had its strongest showing ever. The team had three wrestlers go undefeated on the first day of the tournament. Tai White, Jeremy Ridge, and Axel Jurgens all advanced to the quarterfinals and Kyle Hulsey and Tony Correa also advanced to the second day.
Jeremy Ridge moved up a weight class to wrestle at 152 pounds. Over the two days he defeated the 18th, 24th and 36th ranked wrestlers in the state, recorded four Falls and two Major Decisions while going 5-1 to take 2nd place. Axel Jurgens made the semi-finals at 160 pounds and become Acalanes second ever Coast Classic medalist by placing fifth. Tai White recorded three falls on the first day of the tournament to reach the quarterfinals at 132 pounds before unfortunately having to withdraw from the tournament due to illness. In Just his first year of wrestling Kyle Hulsey had a fantastic tournament. He had three wins by Fall and lost a close 3-1 match to one of the top heavyweights in the state. Kyle was one match from placing and scored 12 team points. Ben Ross went 2-2 while scoring important team points. Tyler Sverak won his first match at the Coast Classic. Ben Krey, Ed Gray, and Tony Correa all first year wrestlers had great matches in their first big two day tournament. Acalanes finished in 15 place out of the 75 teams. If Tai had not had to withdraw Acalanes would have easily finished in the top ten.
This is always a fantastic bonding experience for the team. The wrestlers enjoyed the hotel hot tub, video games in their rooms and big team dinners. It was a great couple of days for the program.
On Thursday and Friday The Wrestling Team competed in the 33rd annual Lou Bronzan Tournament at Liberty High School in Brentwood. 64 Teams from California and Nevada competed in the Battle for the Belt.
Acalanes had its best showing ever at the Lou Bronzan. Jeremy Ridge won the 145 pound championship and was named the tournaments outstanding wrestler. Axel Jurgens placed 2nd at 160 pounds and Tai White placed 4th at 126 pounds. Ben Krey, YaYa Qteishat and Tony Correa also had great matches and gained valuable experience. It was a great showing by the Acalanes Wrestling Team.
Last Weekend was a very important one for the Acalanes Wrestling program. For the first time ever Acalanes had wrestlers participating in the Zinkin Classic at Buchanan High School in Clovis California. The Zinkin Classic has become one of the premier wrestling tournaments in the western region. Ten of the past thirteen California State Team Champions began their season by participating in the Zinkin. Last year’s tournament included 52 teams throughout the Western United States. Here is how the field fared at the 2016 California State Tournament:
8 State Champions & 14 Finalists, 42 State Placers, 119 State Qualifiers, State Team Champions (and 3 of the top 4 teams overall).
Our three captains Tai White, Jeremy Ridge and Axel Jurgens made the trip to Clovis. They all performed exceptionally well. The three of them finished 22 out of the 52 full teams competing at Zinkin.
Jeremy Ridge went 5-2, made the quarterfinals and won 4th place at 145. Tai White suffered a tough loss in the second round but wrestled back strong to go 5-2 and win 7th place at 126. Axel Jurgens just missed placing at 160 but upset the 8th seed. It was an great showing by Acalanes Wrestling.
While our captains were in Clovis the rest of the team went to the Bill Martell Invitational at Northgate High School in Concord. This is a varsity tournament but we feel so strongly about our new wresters this year that we sent them to compete against varsity wrestlers who have been wrestling for several years. Ben Ross had a great day. He went 4-0 and won 1st place at 145. Antonio Correa took 5th place at 220 and Logan Branch took 5th place at 185. It was a good day of experience for our young team.
The Wrestling Team is having a great start to the season. Both Tai White and Jeremy Ridge are appear in the State rankings and Tai White, Jeremy Ridge and Axel Jurgens are all ranked in the NCS. Acalanes has never had two State ranked wrestlers.
It was a great first weekend of competition for the Acalanes Wrestling Team!
The Team competed in two tournaments on Saturday 12/10. A varsity tournament at San Marin HS in Novato and freshman/sophomore/ JV tournament at Clayton Valley HS in Concord. Since the team has many new and young wrestlers the decision was made to send most of the team to Concord. Only 5 wrestlers went to the Green and Gold Varsity Tournament in Novato to compete against full teams yet Acalanes still finished 6th out of 25 teams! The team won a 1st, two 2nds, and a 4th place medal.
Junior Captain Jeremy Ridge was the champion at 152 pounds, Senior Captain Tai White took 2nd at 132 pounds, Senior Captain Axel Jurgens took 2nd at 160 pounds and first year senior wrestler Kyle Hulsey took 4th at 285. The JV performed well in their tournament in Concord as well. It was a great start to the season!
