Overall, a tough start to the Varsity Girls Volleyball season, with a 3-set loss to Heritage. The Dons never could find a solid rhythm to their game with serving, serve-receive, and general passing proving to be the top issues. However, there were some definite highlights:
Set 1: At 2-10 (Dons’ score listed first) Jojo Harnish hustled to get to a pass and put a beautiful backset up for Lisa Carrington to put away for a Dons’ score. At 3-13 the two paired up again with Harnish pushing out a long cross-court set that Carrington hit down for another score.
Set 2: At 1-0 Marie Teichman deftly put a power dink into the hole on the Heritage side. At 3-4 Brooke Aiello delivered a kill from the backrow on a set from Julia Amaral. Aiello and Amaral teamed up again at 6-10 with Amaral sending the set across the court to the outside and Aiello getting up on top to put it down. At 8-15, Dani Grobeck came up high off the floor, stretched over the net and stuffed a hard-hit kill attempt by the Heritage outside hitter. At 10-21, Meghan Dalziel displayed quickness at the outside as Amaral sent a low set to her. Dalziel beat the block and sent the ball to the Heritage floor.
Set 3: At 3-5 Lila Schoenfield sent a rocket of a serve over for a Dons ace, while on the next rally Amanda Jarquin saw an over-pass from Heritage come toward the net and put the hammer down for another Dons score. Defensively, Dalziel saved a hard-hit kill attempt from Heritage by diving with an extended arm to miraculously get the ball, sending it over the net on onto the Heritage floor for a score. At 15-23 Amaral displayed her serving skills by dropping a service ace past the Heritage team.
Final Scores: 4-25 11-25 16-25
Stats: Kills: Dalziel-3; Aiello-2; Jarquin-2. Aces: Schoenfield-1; Amaral-1.
